I thought the extension he signed before the 2016 season was for 5 years, with only two years guaranteed. But from this website I can't tell if he's a UFA after this season or after 2020. Anybody know?

quote:

Drew Brees signed a 1 year, $24,250,000 contract with the New Orleans Saints, including a $30,000,000 signing bonus, $24,250,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $24,250,000. In 2017, Brees will earn a base salary of $13,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $19,000,000 and a dead cap value of $37,000,000.

The rest of his contract voids after the 2017 season. He'll be a free agent in 2018.

he's a UFA but his cap extends for 3 years currently. The cap accelerates to all in 2018 if something happens i forget.

His contract voids at the start of FA. If that happens an extra $12 mil accelerates onto next year's cap (he's counting $6 mil already).

If he is extended before the start of FA the rest of the money stays in their respective years, and he'll cost whatever the new contract is + $6 mil.

Also has a no tag and no trade clause, so it's extension of FA, and FA would be very bad for us.

can't they still structure the deal pushing cap out future years post his actual playing years which kind of has a wash effect to possible accelerated cap?

He's a UFA after this year. He signed a 2 year contract extension to lower his cap hit a couple of years ago. He will not negotiate the contract during the season. We'll see how it plays out this offseason.

Yes they can. At some point though, especially with a new contract on top, it will accelerate.

If he does hit FA it's likely the only way to retain him, by giving him a similar deal to what he just signed last year.

But as the saying goes, keep pushing until he leaves and take the hit I guess.

He's owed 18 million dollars after this season even though he's not under contract.

No matter what happens after this season or what he signs for. 18 million is still his on top of what he asks for.

ONLY if he hits FA. If he gets extended before then the contract doesn't void and the extra $12 mil does not accelerate.

Close.

He signed a "5 year" deal what was in reality, a 2 year deal with 3 years added to extend the amortiziation of the $30 million signing bonus. Those years void/will void and thus the remaining 3 years of $6 million dollar signing bonuses will accelerate to next years cap - leading to a cap hit of $18,000,000 for Drew Brees whether he is on the roster or not.

Now, he might renegotiate (which I don't know how it's structured so I can't even guarantee that it could be renegotiated) but, why not hold the Saints over the barrel again? That seems like the more logical solution for Brees.

tl;dr
-Brees contract is up after this season
-As it stands, he cannot be franchised tagged per his contract (and the cost that would be associated with it - 44% raise in salary)
-As it stands, even if Brees signs somewhere else, it looks like we'll be carrying $18 million cap charge for Drew next year.

That's what I meant

No matter what 18 million will be on the books for Brees next year either he's with us or not.

Unless some how we can restructure that.
