It's gotta be:

CB > C > WR > ILB

as the top 4 needs.

We still have a young project in Toon, he got separation from DBs, but the issue was his able to haul it in. If he's been consistently working on it since the Jets game and can show the team we can trust him, it's going to be a mightily good receiving corp if we can also pick up a player like cooks, OBJ, or matthews as well.

Imagine your WR corp like this:
1. Colston
2. Stills
3. Matthews/Cooks/OBJ (draft pick)
4. Toon/Meachem/Morgan duking it out for #4

I seriously doubt Landry will be there in the 4th.

I think he is a boss receiver and whoever gets him will get a steal.

But before the combine he was a 2nd-3rd round kind of guy.

After his piss poor performance at the combine he is a 3rd-4th round guy.

I'm sure he will do much better at his pro-day and probably be gone in the 3rd. But if he still around in the 4th I wouldn't be completely shocked!

Hypothetical draft scenario that didn't warrant a thread but that I'm interested to get some opinions on...

Let's say our draft shakes out something like this...

1st WR/CB
2nd WR/CB
3rd C
4th LB

..

Going into our first 5th pick, Aaron Murray is sitting there.. Would you be upset if we took him? Brian Baldinger (sp?) was asked which QB he thought would have the best career in this years class.. He answered Murray. He said he isn't the best - not now - but that he thinks in the end he will be. And I realized I agree with him.. A point he made that stuck with me was that a lot of top QBs in the league now played a lot of games in college, rather than just 1 or 2 seasons that a lot of guys these days do. Murray has been the temple of consistency. 4 3000 yard seasons. That's impressive as frick.

The guy is exactly like Drew. A little small, not the biggest arm, but a hard worker and he can sure sling the ball.. Just seems to me like he would be a perfect project and the team has pretty much acknowledged we only have a few seasons left with Drew..

YES, I am aware that the biggest asset to Rookie QBs these days is their small contracts.. But I'd rather pay a medium contract to a QB that has learned under one of the best of all time for 3-4 seasons and is familiar with our system.

I'm also aware we have RG4 and the team obviously likes him.. But that could just be because he will be a cheaper backup option than McCown this season, doesn't mean he is the guy of the future.

Anyways, TL;DR how would you react to the team drafting Aaron Murray in the 5th if all of our needs are met? What are y'all's opinions of him?

If the FO were to think that Murray is light years ahead of RGIV and always would be then no I wouldn't mind much.
I would be surprised as he will bench sit for the next three years then have only 1 year left on a cheap rookie deal.
With how bad our cap is going to be after Brees would rather wait and draft a cheap QB when the time comes.

This is how I feel; if we are all-in , we gotta be all-in for real. I would rather take a chance on some guy that might not play out at all at a position we need help in the next 3-4 yrs.

I'd be happy with any QB 4th Rd or later. They won't do it unless they rate it an extreme value. In that case, how could ya argue? Griffin has legit potential but you can always amp your potential on the team.

I like Fales and Price as late round or UDFA invites. Wouldn't mind Jordan Lynch as some kinda Tebow like H back.

Wish we could see some gadget play with Cadet throwing the ball too. He played some QB at App St too

What if Calvin Pryor or HaHa Clinton-Dix were available at #27. Along with Cooks/OBJ

What would you do?

I'm going to try and find the link, but I read where some scouts think he'll make a bigger impact that the wideouts generally expected to go before him.

quote:

CBS Sports' Dane Brugler believes Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks is a "special athlete" and should be the third wide receiver drafted off the board.
"I know Beckham seems to be the trendy pick to be the 3rd WR drafted, but Brandin Cooks is still my guy after Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans. Special athlete," Brugler tweeted. Cooks' stock has continued to rise over the last couple of weeks after a strong outing at the Senior Bowl and Combine. Analysts have been super high on Cooks abilities, and he's drawn comparisons to Steve Smith and a "more physical" Tavon Austin as of late. Rotoworld's Josh Norris has him among the top 30 prospects in the draft. Mar 10 - 12:54 PM

quote:

Cooks may be best suited as a slot receiver in the NFL, but there were plenty of occasions where in won on the outside in the Pac-12. In fact, Rotoworld's Josh Norris compares him to Victor Cruz, despite his shorter stature. Some have compared Cooks to Tavon Austin and Wes Welker, but what separates Cooks from other top receivers in this class is his inability to win consistently at the catch point in contested situations.

quote:

NFL.com's Gil Brandt mentioned that Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks reminds him of a "faster Wes Welker."
"Brandin Cooks working out today at Oregon State pro day. Reminds me of Wes Welker, only faster. Great kid. Going to be good NFL player," Brandt tweeted. Cooks ran a blazing 4.33 forty at the combine, which was the second fastest time by any player that attended. The explosion that Cooks showcased this season, has followed him to the Combine, as well as his Pro Day. Cooks has the ability to win inside and out, and with his type of explosiveness, he has the ability to take the top off a defense. The all-purpose weapon could hear his name called in the second half of the first-round.

Still Cooks, I think both of those two will be great players especially Pryor, but we already have the best safety duo in the league with Vaccaro/Byrd

I'm just curious is all. We could get a WR in the 2nd, although he may not be OBJ/Cooks caliber in regards to playmaking.

I just considered the ability to have a defensive back unit like Seattle that could potentially be even better is crazy in my mind.

Imagine a defense like this:
DL: Jordan, Hicks, Jenkins, Galette
LB: Butler, Lofton
CB: Lewis, P.Rob
S: Pryor, Vaccaro, and Byrd

a great DL that can get to the QB, 2 of our potentially best LBs covering the middle, and all 3 safeties are really rangy and could get to the ball, it's turnover mayhem imo. lol

I still think you go after a CB in the first.

or

Trade up and get Sammy Watkins. Falcons did it with Julio, and let's be honest... It paid off for them. He's an animal

In what way, did it pay off in that the player was good or team success?

I'd argue that trading all those picks has alot to do with how horrible a situation they are in now.

we are not giving up a king's ransom for Watkins.
To move up that high, you're giving up AT LEAST 2 1st and a 2nd.

I'm not sure if you're serious or not, based on your history...it's serious I'm sure.
