If we go D first and they score, then we know what we have to do on our possession. If they score a TD, we have to go for it every 4th down. If they don’t score, we know we can just kick the FG to win.

Yes, and you go on defense first. You definitely want the second possession. You could get a turnover in great field position and you also have a chance to go for the win. Detroit may have had to punt or kick a FG and Saints would be in better position to win either way with FG or TD.
