Don't you know it! Sometimes people didn't even have to be there.
And then this happened!

In his only season with the Saints, Dwight Smith appeared in 15 games, all starts, and registered 86 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, seven passes defensed and two forced fumbles. He was released once Sean Payton took over. I really didn't understand the move at the time as he was really one of our only good defensive players.
But today, I'm going to go with RB Mario Bates. In true Saints fashion of the time... coulda, woulda, shoulda been a good running back.
Drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the 2nd round (44th overall) of the 1994 NFL Draft. Played four years for the Saints with 40 starts, 678 carries for 2554 yards 21 touchdowns and 44 receptions for 262 yards. He played 2 years for Arizona and 1 year for Detroit after that.
I remember he had a great pre season and missed the first half of the season because his teammate broke his jaw in a bar fight. Only the Saints.

New Orleans Saints running back MARIO BATES, the team's No. 2 draft pick this year, will miss up to six weeks after having his jaw broken by teammate LORENZO NEAL, the club said.
Bates and Neal went out after the Saints' 38-24 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday night, ending up at Club 57, a lounge owned by former Saints linebacker RICKEY JACKSON. "Neither one of them are quite sure as to exactly what happened," Coach Jim Mora said. "Things got out of hand and we've got a player with a broken jaw."
Bates was hospitalized to have the jaw surgically repaired. There will be no disciplinary action.

Had the size and speed, but ran straight up with no wiggle. Probably the most frustrating Saints RB of my life. I wanted him to be so good so bad.

The Saints very first Pro Bowler ever!!!
Dave Whitsell #23
On the inagural 1967 Saints team and taken in the expansion draft from the Bears.
In 1967, he lead the NFL in interceptions with 10 and was named to the Pro Bowl. His 10 grabs are still a Saints team record and he is number 5 all time in interceptions in Saints history. He retired following the 1969 season after 11 seasons and 46 career interceptions. In his 3 seasons with the Saints he had 19 picks and 2 scores. Was inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in 1996.
And so I don't get screamed at, Pierre Thomas.
UFA out of Illinois in 2007. Started 22 games with 521 attempts for 2501 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also has 166 receptions for 1363 yards and 7 touchdowns. He's 9th all time on the Saints rushing leaders, 7th all time in rushing TDs and tied for 9th with Lance Moore in total touchdowns.
ETA: Beat me to it today blues. Took too long doing research trying to find out what happened to Whitsell.

Who can't look at this enough. Thanks Tracy Porter, best of luck to ya!
Special mention to Fred Thomas who doesn't deserve half the shite he gets by Saints fans. Any true fan would know he was a good CB until he got hurt and it wasn't his fault that guys like Alex Molden, Ambrose & Keyo Craver sucked and we never got anyone decent until Mike McKenzie.
Played here for 8 years. Had 75 starts, 5 sacks, 13 interceptions and 379 tackles.

Sorry I'm always late on this, but does anyone remember this beast at #23?
Always loved him because we share the same last name.
Paul Buford Jordan (born June 26, 1962 in Iota, Louisiana) is a former professional American football running back in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints.
A four-time All-Southland Conference selection, Jordan left McNeese in 1983 as the All-time leading rusher in Louisiana history. He joined the New Orleans Breakers of the USFL and was the leading rusher in 1984 with 1276 yards and 8 TDs on the ground. He also played in the USFL for the Portland Breakers.
When the USFL folded in 1985, Jordan wound up with New Orleans and started 9 games for Jim Mora's crew, mostly as a blocker for Dalton Hillard and Reuben Mayes. He was a solid special teams performer who had his share of big plays.
In the 1987 comeback against Cincinnati, he scored two touchdowns. In 1988, he had a 44 yard run against Atlanta and in the Washington game, he scooped up a Reuben Mayes fumble and turned it into a 7 yard score. In 1989, despite being hampered by injuries, he finished third in rushing and had another 2 touchdown-day against Atlanta. Jordan was actually released prior to the beginning of the 1991 season, but returned and started in place of an injured Craig Heyward for the second half of the season.
Jordan's son, Brandin Jordan, who plays college football for Southern Illinois University. He played his high school football for coach JT Curtis at John Curtis Christian High School.
Buford Jordan now provides home-based personal training and fitness training to individuals and sports teams.
In 2011, Jordan was selected for the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.

I always liked Bellamy. Not a great player, but a solid NFL starter. (especially considering how bad the rest of the defense was back then anyway.)

Met Buford a couple weeks ago at a camp. One INTENSE SOB. Dude is scary and like 5% body fat.
Tyrone hughes was there too. About 50% body fat.

# 19
Everyone knows Tom Dempsey. Only played for the Saints for two years, but is most well known for his record setting 63 yard field goal, kicked in the final seconds to give the New Orleans Saints a 19–17 win over the Detroit Lions on November 8, 1970 at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans. It's still a record, but has been tied twice. Once by Jason Elam (at Mile High Stadium in Denver) the other by Sebastian Janikowski (at Mile High in Denver).
#19 Guido Albert Merkens, Jr. - Talk about a throw back. Primarily a punt return specialist. During his tenure with the Saints, he served as the third-string quarterback, holder for field goals, special teams player, punt return specialist, with occasional time as a wide receiver and safety.
Career Stats for the Saints: (1980-1985)
~ 20 compeltions on 52 attempts for 213 yards and 2 touchdowns.
~ 32 receptions for 519 yards and 2 touchdowns.
~ 13 rushing attempts for 43 yards.
~ 3 kick returns and 1 punt return.
~ 4 punts for 144 yards.
~ 4 fumble recoveries and 1 blocked punt.
But I'm going with one of my favorite players!
Devery Henderson #19
Homegrown Louisiana kid who grew up in Opelousas, LA, played for LSU (Caught the bluegrass miracle pass and won a National Championship) and has played for the Saints for 8 years after being drafted by the black and gold in the second round in 2004.
Devery has started 67 games and has 223 receptions for 4061 yards and 19 touchdowns. He has 17 rushing attempts for 106 yards and 1 touchdown. He also has 4 punt returns and 6 kick off returns.
