I was at the game, so I don't know if the radio or TV guys mentioned it.

The Pels were up four with 48 seconds left. There was a deadball with Memphis getting possession. Willie seemingly forgot to sub in Daniels and Herb for defense, leaving CJ to guard Morant and leaving Zion on the floor. We were yelling from the stands to put Herb and Dyson in, lol.

All they needed was to get a stop, then had timeouts to burn to sub the offensive players back in. Sure enough, Pels gave up a corner three to Bane.

Willie is just not a winning coach.

That was after the Ja goaltend.

You can't substitute after an instant replay review.

You can if you use one of your two remaining timeouts.

Pretty sure you can't do that either.

Only exceptions are for player injuries.

Not according to the NBA Rule Book.

quote:

No substitutes are allowed to enter the game during an official’s suspension-of-play for (1) a delay-of-game warning, (2) retrieving an errant ball, (3) an inadvertent whistle, (4) instant replay review or (5) any other unusual circumstance.
EXCEPTIONS:
Suspension of play for a player bleeding. See Comments on the Rules—N.
Seriously-injured player. Player must be removed and opponent is permitted one substitution.

You can always sub after a timeout.

Section VI(e): During a timeout, all substitutions are legal for both teams.

After a goaltend by Memphis, we are now the defensive team, correct?

Section VI—Timeouts – Mandatory/Team
h. A timeout shall not be granted to the defensive team during an official’s suspension- of-play.
EXCEPTION: Suspension of play for Infection Control. See Comments on the Rules-N.

Yep...nice catch. Things happened quickly but Willie gotta go ahead & use his next to last TO there. Get Herb, Dyson AND Naji in the game defensively. GUARD BANE...especially at the 3 pt line. BI came off him, when Smart went right around CJ. (Trey actually did a solid job on Ja early in the possession)

Bad thing was...if Bane doesn't hit the basket...Pels don't even have to use their last TO...to sub in the offense. Just get the ball to Herb who is our leading FT% shooter...or Trey or BI and let them hold it until fouled or 24 second clock runs out. IF Grizz scored, like Bane did... THEN you go ahead & use your last TO to get the offense back in. Pretty basic stuff.

Gotta admit...some solid opinions from the stands, during the heat of the action...has impressed me. As I said, things happened quickly...and I assumed I was one of the few that noticed the screw-up by Willie. Good job...but a suggestion...yell louder next time...maybe Willie will hear you.

Bingo

There are plenty of reasons for Willie to lose us, some even from last night.

But there was no ability for Willie to make any subs at the 48 second mark the OP mentioned.

He couldn't sub there.

Couldn't he call TO after a made basket...whether reviewed or not?

You could hear several "come on Willie" and "what the frick is Willie doing" comments in Section 112 last night.

No, only the inbounding team/offense can call a timeout there in a hypothetical where there's no review.

Sorry...my bad...hate to hear that. I kinda look for any reason to badmouth Willie here lately. (Or Zion or BI etc...)

I was 2 rows behind the bench last night. The coaches absolutely wanted to sub, but were informed they couldn't. That entire last minute of the 4th was royally fricked by the refs, but the one thing they seemed not to frick up was that we couldn't sub.

I will continue to say what I have said numerous times.

Willie is an easy scapegoat, as most coaches are. Not saying he perfect or even close (He even admitted his error defending with .4 left last night in his presser) but he is not THE problem for this team . This idea that Burrgo or any other coach would have this team near the top of the conference is a fallacy .
