After the latest Zion Williamson injury news, it was only right to tap in with @InStreetClothes
to get his thoughts:
-- a potential timeline for Zion's return
-- how common are setbacks with hamstring injuries?
-- How this may affect Zion moving forward
LINK
The most relevant bits:
quote:
Guillory: How common is it for players to suffer some form of a setback when recovering from a hamstring strain?
Stotts: Very common. This season over 30 different players have shown up on injury reports with a hamstring-related issue. Of those players, one in three has shown up multiple times, including players like Russell Westbrook, Gordon Hayward and Paul George.
Guillory: Based on what you’ve seen in the past, how likely is it that we’ll see Zion again before the end of the regular season?
Stotts: I expect his return to play date to be fluid, but I bet a late regular-season return is the target with enough time to let him ramp up his workload for any possible postseason action.
Guillory: What’s your overall view on the “Zion is too injury-prone” narrative? Do you feel like it’s overblown or something we should take more seriously after this series of injuries?
Stotts: It’s interesting because the three biggest injuries of Zion’s young career all involve a different type of tissue. First, it was the meniscus in his knee (cartilage) then it was the broken fifth metatarsal (bone). Now it’s the hamstring strain, which is a muscle. In a vacuum, that all seems a bit fluky; however, my biggest concern is all three injuries occurred to his right lower extremity. Eventually, multiple injuries of this magnitude can take a toll on the kinetic chain and potentially influence his movement pattern. Once he’s moved past this current injury, he will likely need to spend time doing routine maintenance on his legs to ensure a problematic imbalance doesn’t pop up.

I guess I knew but didn't fully process that all three injuries have been to his right leg.
Yeah, he is really going to need to hit up Lebron and others to learn some serious pointers on taking care of his body. I feel for him though cause it's clear this stuff devastates him.
I would honestly like as a start for him to fire his so-called "personal trainer."
It cant be a good sign that you were fired early on in your last two jobs(LSU, Jazz), and the guy you took on is continuing to come down with new injuries every season and always having setbacks.

It's a little surprising (to me at least) that it's all to his right leg when he's usually jumping off his left when going to the rim. You'd think with that much force, if his injuries were going to be to one specific leg, it would be the left.

Well....i don't think those guys had the same hamstring strain as Zion, or if they did, then this argument is a terrible look.
Zion has been out for 21 straight games, and the expectation is probably 13 more at a minimum. That basically makes this a 3 month injury.
Paul George missed 7 games and returned. there's been 29 games since he returned and he's missed 9, which i'm sure all weren't hamstring related since PG misses game when he sneezes funny in the morning.
Hayward injured his hamstring same time Zion did, right at the beginning of the new year. He missed 8 straight games, returned and played in 2, then sat ONE game and has since played in 10 straight
I have no idea why he mentions Westbrook. He's missed 2 games all year. He obviously doesn't have the same injury.
This comparison isn't really a good look when you look at the details, and i'll admit i don't know the severity of the initial strain, but both Hayward and PG missed about the same amount of time initially, and have been basically fine since returning. 8 games after the initial injury for Zion wasn't even close to being the timeline of returning.
We all saw Devin Bookers hamstring injury in the playoffs. He missed 3 games.
from January 18th report (Kleber injured his hamstring mid December.
quote:
Kleber has missed 20 games due to a hamstring tear that required surgery. It was initially believed that he'd miss the remainder of the season, but there has apparently been an accelerated healing process. For a big guy who is about to turn 31 years old, a return so soon after a hamstring injury of that nature is surprising, but the Mavs will definitely take the good news and run with it.
He is expecting to try to come back after the all star break, but doesn't want to say that's official.

The difference between Z and the other players is the pelicans want him to be C 100% before he returns. Which is best because if he severely injures him hamstring he’ll be out for months

quote:We don't know for sure, but based on an initial Woj tweet and the general timeline Zion was on, it's a safe bet IMO that it was a grade 2 strain.

Grade 1, i believe the timeline is back in 2 weeks, so if just a re-eval was set for 3 weeks, I think we can safely rule grade 1 out. Grade 2 requires a 6-8 return timeline, which is basically where Zion was trending towards before this setback.

We all saw Devin Bookers hamstring injury in the playoffs. He missed 3 games.
But also, Booker's initial injury in the playoffs was confirmed as grade 1.

We never know the severity with Pels injuries. Even here he's guessing severity based on timelines.

I feel like these kind of posts are attempts to assign blame "something's not normal here, what do we change/who do we fire to fix it?", but I'm not sure how we get that answer, or if there is an answer. Did we finally get 2 star players bought into being here but the catch is they're made of glass?
Seriously, who the hell keeps using the monkey's paw?

that all makes sense. Thanks.
Gives some clarity to this article. it's simply saying its common to see setbacks, not comparing the injuries Zion and PG/Hayward had, like i did.

This part gives me the sads.
