May be a bit of homerism, but I'd love to see Tyrus play for the Hornets. Him and Paul running the pick and roll would be money.
Tyrus could be nice, but Charlotte just locked him up until the 2014-2015 season.
He may become available once he does something to piss off Larry Brown, though.

Marc Gasol would be next on my list. If we find a way to get rid of Emeka we have a shot at getting him, but would most likely have to overpay.
I think Marc Gasol is totally worth overpaying. He is 7'1 and only 25 years old. I would pay him his max contract which is like $14.5 million I believe. I really hope we can drop Okafor so we can afford him.
I really doubt Memphis is going to pay him that.

Will a sign and trade for Gasol work in this instance and send Okafor out to Memphis?

Lineup
1.CP3/Collinson
2.Thornton/Pondexter
3.Melo/James Posey
4.West/Brackins
5.Okafor/Gray
so how in the frick are we supposed to get melo without giving up thornton, posey, collison, okafor, or west?
Oh yeah...definitely Gasol as well. It'd be nice to have a solid defense for once.
My two most desired players to come home are Melo and Granger. They are all stars and would be a GREAT addition to our solid pg play.

I'm guessing the answer is "Sign Melo as a FA with the open cap space from losing Peja, Juju, and Songalia and then sign West to a new deal under his Full Bird rights."
Not very likely, but certainly plausible.

Well Okafor would have a similar contract to what Gasol would likely get. That would be really dumb of Memphis.

I think Gasol is #2 on everyone's list after Melo. How realistic it is to get him really depends on what the new CBA will look like. If they keep the current "Arenas Rule" protection for 2nd rounders, I think there is a low probability of getting him because you can't max him out until year 3 of your offer, so he'd be affordable to Memphis the first 2 years. If they go to an NFL style Franchise Tag in the new CBA, Memphis will probably lose him because his salary would jump immediately, not 2 years later.
Another FA center that would be a good fit is Samuel Dalembert. His game is probably as close as will be available to what we had with Chandler. He's a good rebounder and shot blocker with limited offensive skills.

If I understand it correctly they would have a cap hold of the average yearly deal another team could offer. So if someone offers a 5yr/50 million dollar deal. There would be a cap hold of $10 million in the first year.
Memphis appears to be in a good salary cap situation; therefore, it will depend more on how cheap Memphis wants to be.

Memphis would get to pay the contract as it hits the books, so the 1st 2 years would be like signing him to the MLE then they'd jump to max payments in year 3. The offering team would have to count the average of the deal towards the cap in each year of the contract so if it was 5/$60 we'd need $12 million in cap space even if the first year only paid out $6 million.

This is how.
We gain this much cap space
Julian Wright SF 23 6-8 225 $2,858,057
Darius S PF 32 6-9 248 $4,818,000
Peja SF 33 6-10 229 $14,256,000
cap space $21,932,057
You package either Thornton or Collinson with Posey to gain draft picks and a couple of role players.
41 James Posey SF 33 6-8 217 Xavier $6,478,600
We have plenty of money to go after Melo and at least one Middle tier player. If West exercises option than we have another $8 mill but then we have a major hole to fill.
We could easily afford Melo after losing Peja's contract. I like our chances if we can get another marquee player to team up with CP3 and Melo.

Their cap situation is worse than HoopsHype shows right now, as only one player's $3 million contract is on the books despite Rudy Gay signing a max extension and Zach Randolph negotiating a large extension.
Combine Tony Allen and Rudy Gay's deals with the likely extension by Randolph and they'll have probably between $32 million and $40 million tied up in three players.
Combine that with the team options on OJ Mayo ($5.6 million), Darrell Arthur ($2 million), Hasheem Thabeet ($5.1 million), etc., and they're up to between $44 and $52 million BEFORE dealing with Gasol, which puts them at the edge of the soft cap.
Matching Gasol's offer at that point would take them past the soft cap and likely right up against the luxury tax.

thanks for the clarification

That's not how the cap works. We are at roughly $70 million in payroll right now, the cap is set at $58 million.
$70 million - $21 million = $49 million
$58 million - $49 million = $9 million in cap space
The Luxury Tax Threshold is not the same thing as the Salary Cap. Once you hit the Salary Cap you are limited to using exceptions. There are other things that effect your cap space as well, like holds you have to place for resigning West and Thornton. If we do nothing besides let exipirings expire and plan to keep Thornton and West, we will be right at $58 million and limited to the MLE.
Keep in mind that if the lockout comes all of these rules could change dramatically.

Gasol, with a real point guard he'd put up all-star numbers. He's got a good offensive skill set that he developed in Spain, he can finish around the rim, and he is tough in the paint. Gasol would be a perfect fit here.

Granger or Gerald Wallace

Thanks for clearing that up.
