The trade this team needs can't be found at the trade deadline this year, a off season type of trade is the only way to fix the problems we have. And truthfully we would have hurt ourselves even more with a panic trade at the deadline, this team has way to many holes to fix you need the off season to address this.

Priority 1 will be to replace Jonas and get shooters, but this season has proved we need to stop looking for players with Zion in mind. Get players like Claxton and Cam Thomas and if Zion ever plays make him adjust his game to fit around those type of players.

Was Hurter available?

Bamba is a bad basketball player, he's not moving any needle for us.

Vanderbilt - Utah valued getting off of the Conley contract more than 1sts, something we could not do, no big contract to dump to make it happen like with Westbrook.

The world is not over though.

We probably squandered an opportunity to go from play-in to maybe second round team, but for instance, almost all those Lakers will be free agents.

If we so want, we could have a dramatically different team next season. We just need to make some tough decisions that will include a lot of fan favorites and may even mean giving up some developmental guys.

Bruce Brown, Grant Williams, Naz Reid, Nick Richards, Malik Beasley, Seth Curry, Lonnie Walker, Alec Burks, Jared Vanderbilt, Mo Bamba. All guys likely to be available in FA.

OG, FVV, and Siakam likely still going to be on the block.

we went over this for you at the deadline.

no zion.
say after me, no zion.

without stud muffin pels were not getting out of round 1.

the prices would have been so high at deadline for the actual athletic centers to deal with PNR and defend other bigs and rebound to say nothing of passing and ft and 3 pt.

if the pels were cooking and just needed x or y then you sell some firsts.

not without zion and also, performance of a solid team.
these guys are struggling to the finish line.
Jose has stress reaction issue.
herb is not a good shooter.
Daniels is Simmons.
cj has nagging Injury.
unsurprisingly nance is beat up.

keep your powder dry dude.
i still want to see zion play a few and pels make the playoffs as 7 seed or 8.

I'd disagree that those are the difference between a play in and a likely road 1st round series win. They make a difference in the margins, but that i the difference a really, really good player would make.

Yep. The Herbs/Najis/Joses of the world need upgrades to at least 1 or 2 of them. And maybe not even an upgrade, just a better fit.

I'm still a bit higher on Herb than most Pels fans I think. Can't shoot the 3 for shite but elite defense and does everything else well on offense with cutting to get easy buckets and just being smart and knowing where to be, when to screen, etc.

is Poetl the all in guy in your opinion for our potential 1-time shot at going into the tax for a title? I'd disagree with that.

I wasn't looking at Poetl as the saviour to make the Pels a contender this year. Our saviour is currently riding the pines. I have watched Poetl play some games with the Raptors and he passes the eyeball test. He can put up points and he usually seems to be in the right place at the right time defensively and can protect the rim. With a JV/Poetl combo at C, that could also free up Larry to come off the bench as a 4. I'm not sure how much he wants on a new contract, but whatever.

Not enough minutes availabile since Trey plays some of the 4....unless of course Zion is not healthy lol.

I think I'm just misreading your post. I read it again and the way I take it's saying we're 4 on 5 now, but we should have kept Graham and then we wouldn't be playing 4 on 5.

Sounds like that is not what you meant, but that is how I read it. My bad there.

Cam Johnson was traded along with Bridges, and I bet the Pels could’ve put a package together to grab Johnson even if Brooklyn was hell bent on keeping Bridges.

This would have been a formidable lineup without many safe players to double from without Zion, and become flat scary with Zion:

CJ/Jose/Kira
BI/JRich
Cam Johnson/Dyson (presuming we traded both Naji and Herb to the Nets)
Trey/Jax
JV/Nance/Billy

How much you willing to pay to extend Cam?

He's probably going to fetch nearly $20mil.

Said it many times since the deadline.

We needed a big to play since they punted on Hayes’ development. They failed to upgrade.

He has another year before becoming a RFA(edit…no he doesn’t I misread, but I’d still shave Jax for a big shooter), but I’d be willing to shave JV and/or Jax’s salary and roll with Larry/Billy and a replacement emergency/development big if Cam is panning out to be worth it.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of Cam Johnson.

But if we're making a move we know is forcing us into the tax, which we may only get 1 shot/season to do so, I'd like to dream a bit bigger.

Even extending Cam at (like $11-13mm increase in his salary) $18-20mm it seems that you can probably stay under the $162mm tax line by shedding Jax and Temple. That likely means you also don’t resign JRich and roll with Liddell as Zions backup, so it isn’t perfect, but I think there is a path there if the Pels don’t want to be a tax team yet.

Jax isn't on the books for next season. I imagine we'll undoubtedly not keep Temple another year.

Without looking, you can likely or possibly work your way under the tax next season, but there are quite a few guys to extend or replace after that season where we'd run into issues I'd think. We'd be around $150mil with only 7 or 8 dudes on the books.

Yeah, with 3 max guys it is going to be skinny to stay under the tax, unless there is a really big bump in the cap, but in this scenario you aren’t having to deal with extending Herb and Naji since they are part of the trade, so that should help the future cap planning a good bit.

Still, my main point is that making one roster change and getting a big bodied shooter could have changed (and still can) the dynamics on the team pretty dramatically.
