Tobias Harris

I've seen a lot of wish list chatter on him lately and I do know it was questionable whether Orlando wanted to give him a big contract, so he would fit the mold of a Demps RFA target. Why do you Harris fans think he would work here? He did shoot a decent percentage from 3 this season, 36.4% after a pretty bad 1st 3 years, but isn't he more 4 than 3? Nearly 50% of his shots are from 10 feet and in, so he's not exactly a perimeter player.

First of all, he's an RFA, so not only would we have to pay him, but we'd almost certainly have to give something up to Orlando for them not to just match.
Second, yeah he is a really talented up and coming player. Size, versatility, good defender, great finisher. I see him as a 3/4 swing. Can play either position depending on the lineup and matchup. I see him playing more 3, personally, but his 3 point shooting is absolutely a concern. Not sure that's what we need, unless we shift the lineup a bit.

He has the potential to be a Draymond Green type of player if used effectively.

I can see that. And Draymond actually shot worse from 3. It just shows you how perceptions are.

Are you comfortable with a shitty center?
Harris would mean no Asik. There are some teams who can throw big money at him, ORL included. You could be looking at $50m over 4 years

Yeah. And I wouldn't be too comfortable with that.

Very valid point. I think priority #1 should be getting a solid center in order to maximize AD's abilities. We shouldn't let Asik go, just to downgrade at the position. I don't think I can deal with another Steimsma-like performance at Center for a full season.

I'm assuming you have to give up Ryno or Tyreke to get him, so I don't think the money is the question. The question is can he be the starting 3. If so then it's probably worth the money and giving up one of your 6th men. Most of us have been on board with turning Ryno into Batum who makes $11-$12 a year too. The Batum hypotheticals wouldn't have cost us Asik, no reason to think Harris would unless it were about fit, not money.

Yes. He definitely can. But if you're giving up Ryno and starting Harris, we've got to add more than one competent 3 point shooter. In that scenario, I assume it wouldn't cost us Asik.
Could we still use the MLE?
Maybe add a guy like Morrow (is a FA this year again?).

if we could somehow dump Tyreke and still get Asik or another quality center

Yes. We don't have the cap space to make a hostile bid on Harris, it'd have to be a S&T.

No, he has 2 more years on his deal, but Dunleavy Jr. has become my goto MLE level FA for replacing Ryno if we move him.

Would be a good move. Trading Harris for Ryno, picking up Dunleavy for the bench. That's an upgrade. Would need to pick up another bench PF/C and hold on to Asik.

I'd rather go after RoLo or Koufas. They should be in the same ball park as Asik money wise. Pipe dream is to grab Cauley-Stein somehow but that is not happening. I'd also be open to trading Ryno if it meant we get a solid 3&D wing.

Except the reason we traded for Asik in the first place was so we'd have his Bird Rights because we won't have the cap space to sign a FA like Asik or RoLo or Koufos.

I'd prefer to give up Tyreke for him for that reason alone.

If you keep Asik, you won't drop below the cap and will keep the MLE available.

That would change my position a bit, but not sure how much.

Unfortunately, I don't think we have bird rights for Ajinca.

Not if you want to solve perimeter defense issues. Maybe a coach with a real scheme changes that, but Harris isn't very good on that end of the court. He's an offense first player.
I'd rather take my chances w/ expiring Gordon/Anderson than commit to Harris.

We have his Early Bird Rights and can go up to $5.3ish million to resign him. Same with Babbitt.

Thanks for clarifying. Both of those guys would be nice to bring back if you have the roster spots. I'm not sure how much more of a run Withey will be given at this point.

In today's NBA, come playoff time, AD is a 5. So we will be paying 9-11 mil per year for Asik when he'll be sitting on the bench. Ryno plays the same position as AD, so there is another 9 on the bench. It's weird, but I don't think we can afford to NOT sign Asik.
