re: There's a universal thought that Gentry has done enough to earn another year

Gentry definitely has short comings in game management and defensive strategy, but versatile is exactly what he has been
I'd argue it's his biggest skill. It was an obvious strength coming in where we had a contrast of stories of listening to others, like a stats guys convincing Gentry to try playing RoLo more in Phoenix compared to Monty and his My Way or the Highway approach to coaching who only hired guys in his comfort zone from his Philly days.
Gentry has been trying to implement an offense similar to what we've seen this year from day one. He failed the first 2 years. This is the first year we've seen actual sustained buy in from the players and I credit a lot of that to Finch. It is a coaching skill to be able to swallow your pride in your supposed area of expertise and not only let a guy like Finch implement the offense, but give him credit for it regularly. I'm sure Rondo has helped too, but I think you have to have a homerun hire to get a better staff than what they currently have.

He has earned his job this season, despite ups and downs (every team has them)

right...and who would that be?
we can all gaze longingly on brad stevens for example but he's a very rare outlier, and was a huge risk at the time. the "good coaches" are all NBA lifers for the most part...kerr is a retread, dantoni is a retread, bud & brown were assistants, casey is a retread, thibs is a retread, and on and on
gentry is right there with the rest; give him SMART (not just talented) players and a good staff, he will succeed just like all the others

didn't want Monty fired when he was.
don't want Gentry fired now.
get rid of dealing dell before hiring the next coach.

Rajon Rondo on team chemistry improvement: "I can’t take any credit. It’s all Gentry, and guys within the locker room. Our personalities click. We have a lot of laidback, chill type of personalities. A couple funny guys. We lost a couple funny guys, but it’s still a great team."

Right. I don't see anyone like that available. I think you let things keep rolling at least one more year to see how good Finch is and how the players respond to him. He's the kind of up and coming assistant you'd consider hiring if you were doing a fresh search and not just looking for retreads.

I'd be completely fine with finch as coach

This is all assuming Gentry comes back and I can't imagine he does that without an extension + $$. Asking him to coach on an expiring would be a bad look for a franchise that may finally be turning the corner on and off the court.
And, then if he gets that extension, I don't know of too many scenarios where they fire Gentry for cause and Finch has success running the same stuff with mostly the same roster.
But MM hinted at personal issues during the season. Maybe Gentry decides to retire. Rolling with Finch or Erman as HC to continue on what they're building makes some sense from the outside

With a team option he was basically a lame duck this year as well.

I don't think he hinted at "personal issues", IIRC he basically said he wasn't happy. And who could blame him, external factors dealt him a less than ideal hand every year. But winning cures everything. Jake Madison mentioned they announced Gentry before the game recently which they apparently had stopped doing.
Still, at his age I can see him retiring soon. Maybe do a short extension which keeps Finch hanging around waiting for his chance.

Sort of. The idea was likely always re-evaluate after year 3. Plus he didn't win 48 games last season.
I will be truly shocked if he comes back without a raise and a couple of extra years guaranteed

What are his options? It's either retire/tv or coach the Pels. He doesn't have a lot of leverage to ask for more years. Gayle is a brand new owner, so she could reasonably take the position that she isn't ready to make any major hiring/firing decisions.

so you're going with the owner of 2 major sports franchises each worth over $1billion is too incompetent to extend the coach that brought her basketball team to its best record in a decade? and that is reasonable? lol
i'd love to see the faces of Cousins and Davis as you explain that to them
so i am assuming you dont follow the NBA much. what I am saying will likely happen is standard across the league. rarely do coaches coach into the final year of their contracts. they are fired too easily as it is, they want to make the teams at least pause before pulling that trigger.
Gentry just won 48 games on a team that needs to keep the good mojo going; he has much leverage as he will ever get. i repeat, this is how the league works. i may be wrong, but i will be shocked if he comes back without an extension + raise (~3/$15)

I think he will get a raise for next year + an additional year. Maybe they add an optioned 3rd year to make it look nice, but I do not see them committing to Gentry for a full 3 years.
I think Finch is going to be one of the hotter names when the coaching carousel really gets going. So it will be interesting how they treat that. I wonder what Finch's contract looks like and if they will redo it.

Settle down. He has been great this year. He's also 63 years old with a sub .500 career head coaching record. Other teams aren't going to be banging down the door to hire him. Hence my thoughts on "leverage".
ETA: Deleted a comment. Pels are in the playoffs. You can't bring me down from this high!

right. 3/$15, 2+1/$15 whatever. roughly the same. no one has ever said he is a hot coaching commodity or that the Pels should lock him up for 5/$40M
they have had a good season that should be celebrated and enjoyed. they should look to bring Gentry back because he has been a part of that success. bringing him back means they will likely need to give him some more security and a raise. they should not re-up with Gentry at the expense of being able to afford firing him if things go sideways b/c he is an older, mediocre coach
that isn't so hard or even a point of debate really. if he is the coach next season, he is in all likelihood getting an extension + raise. if people dont want him to be the coach, that's a different conversation
Finch stuff will be interesting. wonder what Finch's deal looks like. also wonder how Erman would feel about being passed up
