The Ringer: Time is Running Out for Lonzo on the Pelicans

The clock is ticking for Lonzo Ball. The Pelicans guard is now in his fourth season, and it’s still unclear what role makes sense for him in the NBA. His defense and basketball IQ will keep him in the league for a long time, but his streaky jumper and inability to threaten defenses make it hard to fit him in to most starting lineups. He’s really struggling on offense this season, averaging 11.9 points and 4.4 assists per game on just 38.7 percent shooting. New Orleans will have to make a decision on Lonzo this offseason when he enters restricted free agency. This is a prove-it season for the 23-year-old. And he’s not proving much right now
quote:
Ball has regressed from last season, when his revamped jumper helped him to the best season of his career. That version of Lonzo, who shot career highs in 3-point attempts (6.3 per game) and percentage (37.5), would be valuable in Van Gundy’s system. He could be an elite 3-and-D wing who also moves the ball, even when he’s not the hub of the offense. The problem isn’t that he’s mired in a shooting slump—that happens to everyone. It’s that defenses don’t guard him unless his jumper is falling. Being a bad shooter can be a self-fulfilling prophecy in the NBA. The Jazz left Lonzo open on the perimeter on Tuesday and stopped short on closeouts when they did bother to contest him. His inability to make them pay (he shot 0-for-6 from 3) suffocated the Pelicans offense and made life harder for everyone around him:

Looks like we're not the only ones noticing.

Which means everyone in the league already knows, and no one will give up anything worth a shite for him.
Honestly, as long as we don't have to take back a bad contract, I'd do just about any deal.

Yeah trade him for a fake second and an expiring vet to make the salaries match. The real prize of the trade is more minutes for Kira and NAW and not giving Lonzo $18M this off-season.

You have to have an actual streak of making them to be streaky

If only we could go back in time 3 weeks ago when Hollinger said that Lonzo was "already good and still improving".

0 for 6 is a streak of sorts...

I think he must be referring to the streaks running down a person’s leg from constantly shitting themselves.

BBall IQ I’d question, but he is our best and most versatile back court defender right now.
He’s one of the few that isn’t constantly over helping, sticks to his man, is reading and reacting solidly, and is actually defending the three relatively well(29% DFG% from three, 3rd most defensive three contests after Zion and Hart).
Problem is basically everything else he does is worse than what someone else could give you. Which is why he is the guy I think needs to go to the bench. Bledsoe can give you solid man to man and team defense, while not having the positional versatility due to size, but NAW gives you that, while not nearly as clean or crisp in his read and reacts, he does enough as a team defender and give you WAYY more offensive versatility and reliability

That or just let him work in the gym and or take an extended leave of absence.

Trade him for a bag of Oreos at this point

Lonzo has no idea how to use his "size". Just b/c he's taller doesn't mean he's bigger. Bledsoe is a bulldog. He's a lot stronger than Lonzo, and weighs 15lbs more, and that means a whole lot more than having 4 more inches while being a stick.
It's why jrue is such a great defender, b/c he's so strong, and it's why Bledsoe is as well.
You can't tell me you'd rather Lonzo guarding the opposing teams SF over Bledsoe.
I think the only value Lonzo has is to a team that wants to resign him next year b/c of the social media and fanfare that he may bring, b/c he's not a good basketball player. It's why i still say he needs to go to Charlotte.

I mean the numbers back it up
Lonzo DEFRTG: 105
Bledsoe DEFRTG: 110
Lonzo Defended FG%: 40%
Bledsoe Defended FG%: 46%
Opposing players EFG% is 2.7 less than their average when Lonzo is on the court vs off.
Bledsoe's opposing players EFG is actually better than their average when he is on the court than off.
The same carries over in the half-court. Lonzo on the court produces -8.7 points for the opposing teams vs Bledsoe's -2.3
Lineups featuring Lonzo and not Bledsoe, opponents shoot 51% EFG, 55% with Bledsoe on the court and not Lonzo.
When you go to the hustle stats Lonzo leads in deflections, loose balls recovered off deflections, contests from 2 and 3, steals, blocks.
When you filter the lineups that we are discussing replacing one or the other in the starting lineup: Lonzo, NAW, BI, Zion, Adams hold opponents EFG% to 50%(while shooting 57% efg offensively but an overall negative point differential). Replace Lonzo with Bledsoe it's 57%(shooting 61% EFG offensively, but a staggering +16 point differential so far, which no doubt is affected by NAWS monster game).
I like the NAW/Bledsoe backcourt though because it is more versatile and seems to hold it's own defensively, with room to grow, but projects a lot better offensively. Then you could use Lonzo as a defensive specialist for matchup purposes that you adjust if he is having a good night or not.
Whatever we do though, the current lineup aint working.

Keep in mind this is not a normal newsbreaker, but it is exactly what we want to hear.

Without shirking the historic nature of this morning: I've heard a few teams have inquired about & are interested in the availability of New Orleans Pelicans guard, Lonzo Ball.
Teams interested include: Knicks, Raptors, Mavericks, Clippers, Magic

I’d like to know his track record, but if it is true that would be a best case scenario to have multiple quality teams vying for him.
Means we might actually squeeze some future first and a usable role player out of someone.
...Though some of those teams being listed make me suspicious he just got some shady info(Magic in particular)...While others, like the Raptors, make sense. But the Raptors would probably mean something like Norman Powell for Lonzo and a first rounder or something. Not sure what else they could offer.
