This from BSS is a good way to think of the situation

I’m going to use this so thanks for sharing.

quote:

The Pels "tragic number" is 15. Any combination of Pels losses and Memphis wins that gets to 15 means that we miss the playoffs.
quote:

This tragic number never increases, but the number of total remaining games changes. The 18 games remaining for each team, 36 total, add some context. This shows the predicament the Pelicans are in.

So 36 remaining games and 14 games max can not go our way (Pels loss, Grizz win). 11-7 for us and 7-11 for the Grizz for example puts both our records at 39-43 but we should earn the tiebreaker if we win a game against them. The matchups against Grizz are huge. If we lose one of those then essentially those games count double towards the “tragic number”.

I just did a quick schedule look....

I think the Pelicans need to win 12 of their remaining 18 games in order to have a real shot at the #8 seed.

They have 12 games remaining against teams with losing records, plus 2 games against current #8 Memphis.

They have a chance....

3 games against San Antonio
2 vs Sacramento
2 vs the Wizards
2 vs Atlanta
Phoenix
Knicks
Charlotte
2 vs #8 Memphis

I think this is a very favorable schedule for the stretch run.

The Grizzlies face the Magic tonight at home, which is theoretically their 2nd-easiest remaining game. I'd bet on the Grizzlies winning this one, but the Magic are coming in hot, after just curb-stomping the Rockets, so I think that the Magic have a real chance to help us out.

I think magic pull this one out. No jaren or Clarke. Vucevic can bang with valun down low. During grizzlies little run over the last few weeks valun has gone nuts on the boards.

3 games against San Antonio

This makes me nervous. I feel like San Antonio always has our number no matter how good or bad they may be.

Easiest in the league by a long shot if you look at Tankathons site in the OP. SOS is weakest by wide margin + it gets even easier after this current road trip is complete. Hope we win 2/3 before we come back home

I got Pels and Grizz both finishing at 40-42 and Pels go to playoffs with the tiebreaker.

If they keep doing what they have been doing it is super favorable. They have been winning at 60+% since the big losing streak. They have gotten healthier and the schedule has gotten easier. They also basically control their own destiny as they still have games against the other contenders.
