The Perfect Fit- Mirotic/Davis on Cleaning the Glass

Excellent read w/ video detailing how Mirotic/Davis play off each other on offense and defense. Also has clips of the defensive scheme with Cousins for compare/contrast.

What looked like a Band-Aid instead turned into a move that altered the course of the franchise. The Pelicans ripped off 10 straight wins from mid-February through early March, made the playoffs and then swept the Blazers before falling to the Warriors. Instead of paying huge money to retain the injured Cousins, they let him walk. In the process, Davis and Mirotic grew into a devastating pairing. Each player reached new heights due in large part to the other guy’s influence. The Pelicans posted an offensive rating of 113.6 when Davis and Mirotic were in the game together, which would have been third-best in the NBA last season. And on defense, they were even better, allowing just 103.2 points per 100 possessions when the duo shared the floor, which would have been the best mark in the league.

Instead of trying to make a two-big system work in the era of pace-and-space basketball, the post-Cousins Pelicans are suddenly at the forefront of modern hoops. Davis may have chafed at playing center earlier in his career, but there’s no question that he embodies everything teams want at that position these days—quickness to guard the pick-and-roll, length to protect the rim, perimeter skills to space the floor on offense and athleticism to dive off ball screens. And Mirotic’s shooting and surprising defensive effort perfectly complement Davis’ strengths. Put it together and you get a team that had the point differential of a 50-win outfit after the Mirotic trade last year, and the firepower to pull off a shocking playoff sweep. Which means the Pelicans suddenly need to be thinking about how much it will cost to retain Mirotic next summer—money they once would have budgeted for Cousins.

It is a good article and the fit is definitely cleaner. The other thing that isn't talked about as much is Mitotic's offense wasn't really good in the regular season. I mean, the guys TS% in Chicago was .624. Just .539 in the regular season with the Pels.
He wasn't really comfortable at all and there wasn't a clear plan for him in the system. Now, Gentry and Finch get a whole training camp with him. Imagine if he can become Chicago Mirotic efficiency on offense and provide the same level of defense, rebounding, intelligence he showed all season.

This is what I'm hoping on. It would definitely make it even more interesting if Hill contributes as a plus defender, or we get a legitimate option at the 3.

What helped Mirotic the most is Jrue being super aggressive. Allowed him to settle into a role and not have to force things. If there is a clear pecking order this year where AD is the #1 option and Jrue is a close #2, Mirotic will play better. He had to force a lot at first before Jrue got super aggressive.
Jrue is the lynchpin for so much. If he is playoff Jrue all season, everything falls into place.

what is the opinion/explanation from inside the org on holiday and his obvious change in style at the end of the year?
and what was stopping him from doing this earlier? just injury and his family issue?

Half of me feels like it was deferring to Demarcus too much.

but we had 4 years of passive jrue (more like 2 with the injury, but still)

It was part Cousins and so much being done to fit him in. Then, he had to try and work Mirotic in and also learning to play off Rondo, because remember Rondo wasn't around for a while in the beginning. But eventually he just stopped worrying about making sure everyone else was comfortable and just started attacking. Another thing that helped (weirdly) is that he couldn't get his 3 ball to fall. He lost confidence in it. So, instead of settling and missing, he just attacked.

Jrue being an attacking 2 guard instead of trying to run the offense changed his career

Mirotic's 3P% in Chicago pre-trade was likely an aberration. He was hitting 43% from 3 on high volume (9 3PA per 36). I hope he does, but, given his previous 3 years (35% on 1000 3PA), I doubt he can replicate that 40%+ number over a season.
Good news is he doesn't have to for the offense to hum. That gravity he generates for everyone else is so valuable. If hits around mid to high 30s + continues to max out on defense and he's a hell of a piece around Davis and Holiday

I love the tandem of Mirotic and Davis. They compliment each other so well in every game (floor spacing, inside out, defense, and no egos). They allow Jrue to be aggressive which frees up even more space. What’s even cooler is that you can bring another big in like Randle (who fits both bigs) and just reload on other teams.

Great stuff.
Need Randle to play really well to start the year.
Randle/filler/1st at the deadline may get us that 3 we've been missing since forever...
Jrue
Moore
????
Niko
AD

Mirotic can have a Kevin Loveish type season.

anyone care to guess at niko’s next contract?
can he be extended or does he have to expire first?
it appears he will only have made 30MM or so after this year and he will be 28 pushing 29

My guess is he gets something around 3 for 40-45
I don't think a ton of teams will be competing for his services. I don't think he can finish games as your 5 on most teams and if he is your 4, you need a very specific 5 next to him to finish games. I think he would be great in say Philly, but they have Saric in a similar role on a cost controlled deal. He'd be good in Minny but they won't have money.
I think the Pels could bring him back at around the same salary if they want to. The beauty of having these three bigs is that I think Mirotic and Randle could be very good for us but not put up the monster numbers that people salivate over when they spend in free agency. Its also the reason I think we can re-sign Randle without using cap space this summer.
The one thing that could throw a wrench in all this is if one of our bigs get hurt and it forces Randle and/or Mirotic to get 35+ mpg. Then their stats go up and so will their price tag

The most impressive thing for me was his defense late in the season and in the playoffs. He was spectacular in the Portland series

agreed but to crewz’s point, only next to AD
my hope is that randle allows some reduction in those two guys minutes
the one game POR made close, they did it at the end when niko and AD were gassed

To further that defense point, I wonder how much it really matters who is next to Davis defensively if he's at the 5.
Certainly Mirotic is smart, sound, and competitive on that end. But what could they get away with next to Davis with his backup or if Mirotic leaves?

right
davis is a freak of nature and the more i think about it and watch video breakdowns from last year, the more obvious it is that he (not gobert) was the DPOY. so what we have, when AD plays center, is a player fully capable of making others around him better defenders/raising the level of team defense.
it does lend some flexibility to the issue of team-building

Well it's a good thing we have a history of no injuries
