re: The "Monty Needs to Go" Petition

I'm honestly asking, as I don't know anything about the guy.
I couldn't even tell you Avery's coaching philosophy. What I do know is that he did well with the Mavs coaching a team with a HOFer in his prime, then did terribly with a team in the Eastern Conference built to win now. The outsiders view seems to be that his biggest strength is as a motivator. The local view seems to be that his biggest strength is that he's local. I haven't heard anyone talk about him like he's got a great basketball IQ. I want a coach who's biggest strength is strategy/X's and O's/getting the most out of his players. Avery seems like he'd be a different flavor of what we have in Monty. This team is young and built to run, you shouldn't need to motivate them to play to their strengths, and Jrue, AD and a 3 and D wing should be enough to set the tone on defense. We don't need to motivate these players to play hard, we need to deploy them in a way that maximizes what they can do.

Curious. What are they saying about Monty on the other site you post on?
They have an official Fire Monty thread that's going strong. The sentiment over there is pretty similar as over here. Yesterday John Reid of the TP asked people what they thought of Monty and they got enough of a negative response to post this story:
quote:
Judging by the answers to John Reid's question this morning, not many of you have confidence in the job Monty Williams is doing as New Orleans Pelicans head coach.
Not a small number of Pelicans fans think Williams has run his course at the helm.
But other fans think the players need to shoulder an equal measure of blame.
Take a look at what some fans are saying and share your thoughts in the comments below.

Then it goes on to quote typical idiot nola.com commenters that probably aren't worth reading, but I think it's pretty significant that one of the major papers basically posted a "fans are fed up with Monty" article.

frick Monty. I'm tired of this shite. I know we've been decimated by injuries all season long, but we get embarassed on the reg.

i think one positive about a new head coach in the offseason would be to create new buzz around the team. basically, a rebranding of a rebranding. someone posted back a few months ago how rebranded teams never do well in their first season. i can't remember what happens in the second to the majority, but i think it was positive.
strongly agree here...want optimal buzz? -- hire the 2012-2013 Coach of the Year who was all over the news for his questionable firing.

thanks...I agree that Xs and Os should be the priority at this level, and we really don't need another Monty variation...I really couldn't care less that he's local (talk about bad business).

Don't get me wrong, Karl would be great but he will be 63-1/2 by the time the season starts. It's unlikely he could even coach 5 more seasons, he'd be damn near 69 years old.
Now, if he had a top, up and coming assistant that could transition smoothly when he's gone, ok.

5 years and 69 years old sounds reasonable to me...all he does is win...he's proven. he's available. and the talent on this roster has to be appealing.
...not as much in the playoffs with Denver, but he also didn't have a superstar two-way player to work with.

I'm on the fence about Karl. If there is a young up and comer worth taking a chance on, I'd rather go with that. But if there isn't, even 3 years of Karl can help get this team where it needs to go. He'd help them become an established playoff team with a top 5 player, when Karl retired you'd get your pick of available coaches.

Save it for next season, it won't do any good this year.

completely serious question here…what would be some other strategies?
i think one positive about a new head coach in the offseason would be to create new buzz around the team. basically, a rebranding of a rebranding. someone posted back a few months ago how rebranded teams never do well in their first season. i can't remember what happens in the second to the majority, but i think it was positive.
To me, spending NO money with the team gives them ammo to start talking about things we don't want to talk about.
So, you buy tickets from them, but the cheapest possible or cheapest enjoyable. You don't buy concessions. You don't pay for parking. You do not participate in their marketing or contests. You express yourself in the media, to the team directly, and at games. You do not boo the players (unless they deserve it), but you boo like hell before and after games, when they show Monty (or whomever). You tell their sponsors why you won't or don't patronize them.
You figuaratively scream as loud as possible, amplify it as much as possible, but you do the minimum to keep the team here and keep their grousing about support to a minimum.
You wage a PR battle. You organize.
And when they make the move you want, you reward the team in similar fashion, making sure to tell people why.
Here, you deal with management, not frontline workers unless it is with the team itself.
I actually have been sorting through this for an article. Comments are welcome.
To me, you just can't risk taking a hit to the most basic and convential levels and methods of fan support.
Besides, if you aren't a STH, it gives the team an excuse to dismiss your input. You need to be a customer, not just a fan, to really be heard.

Good stuff
To be clear, I'm not for or against Monty. I see him as a non-entity this season, and next is the thing for him regardless ofnwhat did or did not happen this season, barring extremes (player riot, conference finals).
I am, however, very for fans holding an organization accountable. That needs to be done the right way for.
Last thing: be careful what you wish.

This should be the first guy the go after he's a proven winner a good guy and gets the most of his players.
