Are you saying Rondo + someone else? Crawford was essentially the 2nd unit PG a lot at the end of last season.
Cook is fine as an end of bench guy to develop, but he seems like he needs some real seasoning before we can rely on him for any meaningful minutes. I would like to see a vet ball handler brought in to replace Frazier. Rondo can be that guy. Ballhanders on the team would be Jrue, Rondo, Crawford, Moore, and Cook.
Ideally I would like to also see Moore upgraded to a better combo guard.

Jake Madison with a break down of the Pels Summer League.
That was just the Diallo/Cook relevant portions. There's more on some of the other players and coach McMillan in the article LINK
quote:
–Summer League was going to be all about two players for the Pelicans. The first one being Cheick Diallo. He delivered. The 2nd year player averaged 18.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per game on 56.3% shooting. He also hit over 80% of his free throws and got to the line a good bit. Diallo showed off his bounciness and highly energetic game last season, but in Summer League showed off a refined scoring touch. He’ll still be great in the pick and roll, but showed off a nice hook shot and mid-range game. Diallo is looking like the 3rd or 4th big for the Pelicans this season, and I can’t say I hate that idea. Diallo is also a highly emotional player, and while the fiery attitude is good, he seems like he has the ability to get stuck in his head at times.
–Quinn Cook was the second player that Summer League was about, and while he didn’t shine quite like Diallo you have to come away pretty happy with his performance. Cook averaged 20.6 points and 4.8 assists per game on 55.1% shooting. Cook is less of a point guard like Tim Frazier and more of one in the mold of Reggie Jackson. Cook likes to attack off the pick and roll and slash the defense. He lacks elite athleticism to consistently turn the corner on his defender, but is able to create separation for a pull-up jumper. He has just enough outside shooting to keep defenses honest as he went 8-17 for 47.1% from behind the arc. He won’t be getting these kind of looks playing against solid NBA players, but it shows some potential and multi-dimension to his game. Cook’s passing leaves some to be desired, and he led the Summer League team in turnovers, but he should be fine with the second unit and as a spot starter.
–Diallo and Cook both struggled defensively at times. Diallo’s court awareness isn’t very high, and Cook strugles to stay in front of his man. This isn’t exactly surprising to see from two young players, but is worth mentioning.

I'd say that was pretty spot on for an assessment of those two.
Diallo was great on offense, every facet of it, and showed terrible court awareness on defense. He sometimes needs to remember to keep his head in the game.
Cook isn't athletic. Showed on defense and had his shot blocked several times, even jump shots. Cook was also rather turnover prone, and i'd say is more of a scorer than a point guard. Shooting 47% from 3 is great no matter how you look at it. It's not like he's going to be playing against great defenders off the bench of NBA teams. Also liked how he attacked the basket.
I think both can contribute this year in a good way.

Disinterest in defense. Diallo is just waiting for the games to matter. Laughing at my own joke.

I don't know what it is.
At times it looks like he just doesn't give a shite on defense. Other times it looks like he really tries and he's not that bad as far as individual defense goes.
I don't know if he's just stupid or doesn't know how to communicate, but there always seems to be confusion with him on picks. I think he too often reverts back to just sitting near the paint waiting for someone to come by and block their shot as if he was 16 again playing against chumps.
The effort he gives on the offensive end just doesn't match what he does defensively.

It takes a while to figure out. Rookies are almost universally bad on defense in the NBA because there is so much to learn. Miles Turner once told Zach Lowe about how on defense his rookie year he was literally guessing what his responsibility was on each possession. Things got better his 2nd year and he was guessing a lot less. I'm not saying Diallo will be good by next year, but he's definitely going to be bad this year.

He didnt speak English when he arrived on long island from mali.
He didnt know who mj was.
I learned a lot on playground and much more watching tv.
He missed that.
I f'ing worked on my game vs very good opponents in summer. He's just tall, thats all.
If hes lost on defense its either he is not bright or happy with his lot.
You can get help, mentoring. Watch film with a coach.
I thought manute bol had potential but he went back to sudan off seasons and came back with no game.
Compare to jordan bell whose understanding of defense has him helping teammates position on d.
It is said of bell that he comes to the gym because he wants to get better.
Warriors win, again. Knbr radio guys are drooling over bell.

Jaylen Jones is playing like a man who wants a roster spot.

I'm not watching but apparently Peter Jok is going off in the first extended minutes he's gotten.
quote:
Jim Eichenhofer? @Jim_Eichenhofer 3 minutes ago
Peter Jok cans a couple more 3s with Nuggets giving him too much room to fire. Jok 20 pts, 5/9 on treys. Den 88-87 with 2:55 left
