The dress code was a rebuke of Hip-Hop (fashion) culture. Read into that what you want. I recall players using the opportunity to wear suits and sport coats that were 3-4 sizes too big. But, hey, if you say it was stylish...???????
The dress code has also spawned what you refer to as the “weird fashion show.”

The common fan didn't want them to look like they were from the hood then... the dress code came about because of Allen Iverson

Let's be honest here. These are young, tall, millionaire men who could be setting the cutting edge of fashion, so why not let them do so?
But I can see in the future an NBA 1 and NBA 2 with promotion and relegation like soccer... New Orleans and Memphis and Milwaukee don't belong in the same league with New York and Los Angeles, and their goals are different, just like Fulham doesn't belong in the same league with Manchester United, but that hasn't hurt the Premier League.

No it's not. He was concerned about black guys looking too "thuggish" and scaring away white people. Now when Russell Westbrook wears a designer garbage bag to the game, no one is scared.

So he’s a huckster who advises his clients to breach their contracts. The NBA and other teams could absolutely destroy this Schmuck if they weren’t all ok with this shite
