This logic makes no sense.
Would "it's an NBA team, not a bunch of massive balls of plasma millions of cubic miles in size" have flown to shoot down the team name in Phoenix?
So it's okay to use a bunch of animals as a team, but not a regionally exclusive term for a group of people? Like say the Knickerbockers or the Lakers, even though there aren't many lakes in Cali worth talking about?
Don't like the name, fine. But don't treat it like the name fails on base premise.
Anyway, hasn't the whole name always been The Basketball Krewe of New Orleans?

It's our problem now, we got hornets and bees and fleur de lis and NOLA's and H's and all kinds of crazy stupid shite floating around. I want an identity to go bam. Hopefully it can scare some folks. If not, we can be the New Orleans Folk and have some black guys on a stoop as the mascot.

New Orleans Big Shots - we could make an agreement with Big Shot drink company and use a revamped version of the man on the bottles for the New Orleans Big Shots. Sells them drinks and symbolizes a tough, cluth basketball team at the same time.
New Orleans Po'boys - we can use a nice logo with a boy and basketball instead of the sandwich.
New Orleans Knights - would serve more than one purpose also. Our logo could be a knight holding a fleur de lis shield or a knight on a horse similar to the Andrew Jackson statue. Also, this can be used as word-play to describe the crazy nightlife in New Orleans.
New Orleans Scorpions - We could use the hornets logo and turn it into a scorpion-infused fleur de lis.
New Orleans Refugees
New Orleans Bandits - Logo derived from the UNO Privateer maybe like a Zoro type.
New Orleans Tomb Raiders - Same logo as described for Bandits
New Orleans Marauders -
New Orleans Storm Riders
