When he has been motivated, Aminu is arguably as good or better defensively. He's a much better rebounder than Ariza and with our bigs who don't rebound well, that is crucial to our defense. When his head is in the game, Aminu is arguably an elite defender.
Not arguing but do you have any stats to back up the elite defender thing...advanced metrics perhaps?

FWIW, Darius Miller last game in the D league:
6/10, 14 pts. 2/4 from 3 in 23 minutes
6/10, 14 pts. 2/4 from 3 in 23 minutes

No, I don't. I'm not really a fan of advanced metrics in basketball. I am only going off of watching him play.

Ariza is horrible...Webster and Brewer--we could sign them as backups. it doesn't really improve the team significantly, imo.
if 3 is the position we've decided is our big need, and we have a lot of cap space, it would be nice to get someone better, or at least a young player with some promise.
Iggy is too much, and not playing well...I think of Josh Smith as more of a PF...he would have to play majority 3 on the Hornets.

Again, what type of player are you expecting.
Outside of Lebron and Durant, who are considered to be elite 3's?
Gay?

a guy like Webster for $6-8M
does not compute a that price
you do realize that after 7 years in the NBA, martell webster's closest players in Similarity Score on Basketball Reference include such luminaries as Rasual Butler, Thabo Sefalosha, and Downtown Devin Brown?

i didn't say anything about elite....there's a lot of room between elite and webster/brewer

It's hard to find overall "defensive" stats, but here's proof of what we already know: AFA is a ridiculous rebounder:
LINK
That should work. If not, sort by Small Forwards and look at the offensive and defensive rebound rates for AFA
League average for ORR: 5.3
AFA: 6.9
League average for DRR: 14.8
AFA: 24.0

Bigger shock:
AFA's "true shooting %" (weighted for three throws and threes) is only 3% below the league average
Obviously because of his decent FT% and the amount of dunks he gets, but still amusing since we know how horrid his jumper is.

Aminu's regular FG% is 46.3%

his DEF (steals+blocks+charges) is 16 in the league among SF.

Wow. I guess his recent FT's didn't bring that up much, it's only 50.4

I only see 2 people that would make us a lot better. Not to excited about these players.

quote:I've been thinking for a while that we would upgrade the SF position in free agency, but this list is not inspiring at all. I still think we sign a SF, because Aminu needs a better backup than Lance Thomas (and Anderson can't guard SFs), but I now wonder if we aren't better off spending our money on a PG. A good PG could play a lot of minutes for us, as Gravy could play some time at the 2.

That leaves out a pretty crucial part of defense

He's still middle of the pack with defensive rebound included.
