Good hire, I would have preferred Ham but a coach with solid defensive principles and accountability is exactly what this team needs. Look to run the roster back (Favors?) and cut rotations down to 8-9. Look for depth upgrades through draft and FA at Point and PF/C.

I hope they look elsewhere at Center.

There were much better choices than SVG. The guy was a disaster in Detroit.
Thinking more and more Griff is a fraud.

Stan Van Gundy @realStanVG 6m

I’m excited to join a talented New Orleans Pelicans team. It will be an honor to work with our players and to work for Mrs. Benson and David Griffin, Trajan Langdon, their staff and the great people of New Orleans. I can’t wait to talk to our players and get the process started

Yeah I’m cool with the hire. The assistants will be interesting

Just please keep Freddie V for sake of Lonzo, BI, and Zion's shooting form

Assistants are pretty important in this hire given SVG's penchant for not wanting to develop or play young players. I just saw our buddy Crewz tweeting about that and have to say agree with him.

Failed retread hire? Hire another one!

I assume you’re kidding here. The two could not be more different.

SVG has made the playoffs 8/11 full seasons as coach (he resigned early the year Wade/Shaq heat won the title.) All 3 were in Detroit where he dealt with injury issues among others.

Gentry has made the playoffs 3/14 seasons (he was fired midseason 3 times.) Only one of those even made the first round.

This hire, retread or not, is exponentially better.

Well if you haven’t noticed, Detroit is a disaster. They’ve been to the playoffs three times in the last 12 years, all three as the 8th seed. And haven’t won a playoff game since 2007-2008 season. In the last 12 years they’ve only been over .500 once. In 2015, they went 44-38... guess who was the head coach?

I honestly think SVG learned a lot from Detroit. They didn’t have a whole lot of talent but they played really hard every game. He’s got probably double the talent here then he had in Detroit. Hell, he made Reggie Jackson look like an all star.

Thought today would be the earliest we would hear something and looks like it was.

It being so quick after the final interviews makes it seem like Griffin was pretty sure in his pick, and personally, I think SVG is a solid hire.

Much like Doc, GM Gundy is what got coach Gundy into trouble. Aside from that, he has demonstrated himself to be a very capable coach. Wouldnt call him elite but in the right circumstance, he can absolutely be in that Doc/Malone/Snyder tier that I would put right below your top guys like Stevens, Nurse, Pop, Kerr, Carlisle, Budenholzer, and Spoelstra.

Griff has already indicated Vinson and Boylan will remain on staff.

I figure other than the lead assistants, the staff will remain relatively the same.

Another hallmark of SVG teams: low turnover %. His teams generally play defense and don't turn the ball over.

Both of those are music to my fricking ears.

When/what did he say?

Because that would be incredibly reassuring.

Pay Vinson whatever it takes. In terms of identifiable results in developing players, what Vinson continues to accomplish with so many players is insane. No lie, he should be paid as much as any assistant we hire.

I hope that isn't the case. 2 guys, sure. But I want the HC to be able to bring in a lot of the guys HE wants and can work with.

Told you end of this week. You will be surprised at some of his assistants from what I have heard. If I can verify I will share . Not going to say anything unless I can confirm don’t want to look stupider then I am.

The potential downside to our roster is he is not big on pace. I don't think any of his teams finished top 10 in pace. We could certainly stand to slow it down a bit given the chaotic pace we played with and the turnovers it led to. I just hope we don't slow it too much. He is big on motion offense.

In his press conference following the firing of Gentry.

Of course you do realize it is Van Gundy, not Gundy.
