For their sake, I hope it's a front loaded deal. Paying a 35 year old Gortat 12 mil a year is not good.

that's gonna leave a mark

The NBA pumped $150 million into the player economy right before this free agency with the cap increase on top of a lot of teams already planning to have cap space. This market was set up for inflated prices from the beginning. It looks like I was wrong on Ariza, I figured DC would be the only team looking to overpay him, not half the league.

Did they change the rule in the CBA about 5-year deals?

If not, then Washington fricked themselves because Wall can't get a 5-year deal now.

They changed the rules then.

Under the previous CBA, each team could only have one 5-year contract guy at a time.

That rule is why Minnesota screwed the pooch with Love, as David Kahn refused to give Love the 5th year because he was hoping to use it on Ricky Rubio instead.

He was dumb to think about giving it to rubio anyway.

It's why love has a foot and a half out the door

I couldn't find it with quick digging, but I think what you're thinking of might apply just to max level contracts. The CBAFaq says Bird Rights FAs can get contracts up to 5 years.

Gortat got the going rate for DBL DBL centers. He showed he could hold his own against two of the top defensive interiors in the NBA during the playoffs. He'll probably only be around for 3 years of that deal anyway.

I'm just afraid that this sets the bar for Asik higher than I imagined. Was hoping his contract would be in the 10 mil range.

It's hard to say. His sample size in the NBA is very small. He did shoot 40% from 3 in DLeague though.

The market conditions will be different next year. Also, it can be argued that Gortat is a 2 way player while Asik isn't. Still, I don't think we need to worry about overpaying good starters by a few million. What's killing us right now is Tyreke and Jrue being worth $8 million, it's Gordon.

It might not, 2015 is a better FA class than this year. No LBJ or Melo, but more depth than this year.

Varejao, Tyson Chandler, DeAndre Jordan, Marc Gasol, Perkins, Robin Lopez are all UFA's after next year.

Brook Lopez, Al Jefferson and Roy Hobbert could be available too. (options/RFAs)

At least we have Asik's bird rights, though.

I know Washington loves them some Gortat, they may have "came correct" because they know Gortat had a few suitors. They had said they wanted to try and keep that starting unit in tact going into 2014-2015.

I think it still could be. Gortat was really the only FA center available this offseason, next years class is loaded. Teams also tend to pay a lot more for offense than they do for defense.
