Yeah and with our looming tax issues every cent counts. It's not a bad move but I don't love it.

I fricking love Jose. He’ll end up a local legend if he plays his whole career here.

By far my favorite current Pelican. Seems like a fair deal, if not a slight bargain.
This might be a dumb question, but couldn't we have paid him more this year, moved some of the money to this year on the 2-year extension? If I'm getting this right, this is a one-year deal with a player option for a 2nd, right?
Only reason I ask, is cause he's pretty clearly our 7th best player right now. But he's like our 12th or 13th highest paid player. He's been on a bargain deal for years. We couldn't have taken care of him sooner or longer? He's kind of getting screwed. If either Murray or McCollum gets hurt, he's playing big minutes and getting some starts..

Jose is a fan favorite, and deserves every cent. However, he’s also apart of a core that hasn’t been a forceful team to the playoffs. If the pels keep growing, he will get another option in 6 months, key piece.

We're already into the luxury tax, so why would you want to move money into this year. if anything you want to move it out. IIRC you can't re-negotiate contracts unless its at least 4 years or more.

now he's on a 2yr 6mil deal (if he terminates it early), 3 year 11mil deal (if he plays through) rather than a 1 year 2mil deal.

He was played off the court because he couldn't defend anyone
Remind me again who wasn't straight arse in that series?
CJ was worse defensively. Way worse.
The NBA is about matchups. Jose is a bench player. Him not being effective against certain matchups isn't a big deal. It's why he's a bench player. It's why some games he plays 15 minutes, and some games he plays 30 minutes.
Paying $4M/yr for a guy who's going to single handedly win you games throughout the regular season as a bench player who just brings hustle and energy is a good thing. There's literally not a single negative thing about this signing and anyone who wants to try to look at this in any negative way is simply an idiot looking to be a contrarian.
Looking at what Pritchard and McConnell contracts are like compared to Jose, this is a steal. Jose deserved more.

"the Pelicans went 38-18 in his 56 regular season games, but just 11-15 in the 26 he missed. Those records were also reflected in the fact that the New York City native finished second on New Orleans in aggregate plus-minus (+240), behind only Trey Murphy (+265) – which in itself is a testament to how effective the squad’s bench became. "
NBA.com write up
This is incredible value for the price.
