I love Hawk but guys his stretch right now he is shooting the absolute cover off the ball. He’s like 60% from 3 in his last 10 games, meanwhile Trey is slumping

Hawk will be a great shooter in this league for a long time, but we’re comparing a rookie on a hot streak to (IMO) a future all star caliber type player on a minutes restriction that hasn’t gotten his legs back yet

You can say “size is the only difference” (it’s not, but it’s certainly a big one) but that really doesn’t discredit anything

As much as we would like to pretend that skill is all that matters in the league, size is a massive advantage. It just is. And Trey’s measurables are truly freaky for a 41% 3point shooter who can shoot from 30 feet out with regularity

(To be clear I’m very close to “Hawkins is untouchable” though)

So 3 out of 4 for Curry and 4 out of 4 for Hawk. A difference of one shot. Not that really far away.

It's a HUGE difference.

It's an example of 1 person showing he has the ability to do something but in small amounts, and the other having quite literally never showed that same ability in probably 500 minutes of basketball.

Think about that...Not one time did Hawkins make a legit off the dribble 3 all season. Steph was doing it 25% of the time. I don't get how you don't see that's a massive difference when discussing what a guy can do.

You got me here.
I think we all know and recognize Steph's handles and the obvious 3s, but sometimes I don't think he gets enough credit for how great of a finisher he is.

He does have a nice self made Middy.
He does but it's not truly self made.

It's usually beating the hard close out. Now, fairness to Hawkins, he's getting a hard close out because he's such a good shooter, but he's beating that close out with 1-2 quick dribbles and very confident and great looking middle, no question. But he's not really beating a dude straight up off the dribble to get that middle just yet.

Steph has an all time layup package and elite elite footwork. Idk why people ignore that

I'm not the least bit worried about Trey but I think we're way past getting his legs back.

He's played 18 games, 26mpg and 463 games. Seems like plenty enough time to be back in the groove.

Trey...and it's not close. Trey has already figured out (or been told) that his game should basically be ONLY 3-pters and 3 footers. NO midrange. Any quick glance at a shot chart for Trey this year... should make this obvious. In fact...Trey's shot chart is starting to look a whole lot like Herb's...which it should !!

Trey is taking it to the hoop and finishing which, of course, leads to more FTs. Hawk hasn't yet learned to stop with the midrange stuff (once again, check the shot chart) and he is lousy trying to finish at the hoop, relatively speaking. Wish Hawk was quite a bit taller...but alas.

I mean he’s said himself in interviews that he’s still on a restriction and doesn’t think he’s 100% yet

Also gotta remember he retweaked it just like a couple weeks ago so it’s not like he’s been back the whole time since his initial return

Alright, I've read the whole thread now and I'm still not sure what the case is for actually thinking Hawkins is currently a better basketball player than Trey.

This isn't an accident. Hawks streak won't mean he's a 60% guy, but you can tell by his game that thus dude has all star stuff too.

A coworker and I agree that hawk has a certain intangible element to his game that cannot be described. It's a mentality, you see it in the way he interviews (cmon, when he got his ring at pels practice he said in front of the team in the gym that he wanted another one), dude lives in the gym, and he is going to be a fricking monster when he adds nba weight to his frame.

Ftr I never said hawk would be curry, hope I don't get lumped into that, I was using him as an example of not needing to be even an average defender to be considered one of the great players in the league.

I agree with all of this. I just don’t think he’s better than Trey right now. If you want my honest opinion I think Trey is better than Hawkins right now and I also think Trey’s ceiling is substantially higher, but time will tell

There really is nothing other than him being a more versatile shooter, which I think is fair, but Trey is by far the more versatile player
