Yeah, they're the anomaly. Seems like a super star and a future Hall of Famer is the minimum

It absolutely is and has been that way for awhile. You have to go back to the 93 Rockets to see otherwise but I still think that Piston's team falls under this rule. People forget about Big Ben but he was a freak and had superstar popularity with how he played. Pulling down 15 boards a game and blocking anything that came in the lane made him a different kind of star from the guys who score a ton of points. They also had two guys on their team averaging between 17-20ppg

If you look at Ariza's salary you can tell he isn't considered a true #2. He will be a great role/support player that we have been missing.

You get Marc Gasol, that's your #2 star.

A lineup of
CP3- 20 ppg, #1 player
Thornton - 14-18 ppg scorer, #3 option
Ariza - Defender, spot up shooter, hustle player
Marc Gasol - 18 ppg scorer. Inside scoring threat
Then at the 4 if you get KMART type of player. An energy hard-nosed tough SOB that blocks shots, rebounds and plays excellent D while bringing toughness.

That team is competing for the WC. I'd prefer Thornton coming off the bench with a guy like a old school Cuttino Mobley starting. A shooter that can also put the ball on the floor. Maybe a Michael Redd ?

CP3
Redd
Ariza
KMart
Gasol

Thornton.

But first things first gotta get rid of Emeka.

I thought that was what he was saying but I mentioned that, so I was curious what I was being called out on.

after watching ariza in the '09 finals i think he could really come up big and i sure hope he does. the hornets just need consistent play and i think the trades they made in the offseason will help that!

go hornets!

Pippen may be shooting too high for Ariza, but I've always felt Jordan made Pippen. With Jordan Pippen is a 20/8/2.5/1.5 hall of fame stat sheet stuffer, without Jordan he's an 11/5/1.5/.5 ordinary stat sheet stuffer. Now that's not entirely fair because he was a 10 year vet once Jordan left, but the statistics do indicate Jordan helped his production tremendously.

Ariza just seems like he's a similar jack of all trades complimentary player that will blossom running with CP3. But I guess we won't get to see much of it since he and West will be traded for Carmelo in 6 months

I just think Ariza makes us significantly better on the wing. He's not a superstar, but he can run, he's athletic, can slash to the basket and can play solid defense. We may be giving up some 3 point shooting, but with others we have on the roster I'm willing to do so.

Ariza doesn't have a fraction of the offensive game of Pippen. Pip proved his worth after MJ retired the first time. On a good team, Ariza is the fourth or fifth best player.

I've already seen some gems here, like "Boy, Houston really got fricked over with losing Artest and Ariza. Their loss is our gain" and the comment that followed "Ain't that the truth. Must really suck to be a rockets fan now."

Wow, was that in the trade thread? I love how half of those people think he is gonna be the 2nd scoring option they have so desperately wanted

They fail to realize that Ariza was by far the most disliked Rocket last season.

He'd have to do some dumb shite to jump to the top of the list for most hated hornet. What was so bad about him anyway?

That's tremendously unfair to Pippen.

In 93/94 (completely without Jordan) Pippen went for 22 ppg, 5.6 assists, 8.7 rebounds, 2.9 steals

In 94/95 (without Jordan for all but 17 games) he went for 21.4 ppg, 5.2 assists, 8.1 rebounds, 2.9 steals

People were frustrated with how bad he was on offense at times, even though he was paid to be a main contributor (mistake on the Rockets' part). That's why the Pippen comparison is funny. His upside is limited. He defense is great though - when he isn't going for steals too often.

I was actually a defender of Ariza and thought he'd be better alongside Martin for a full season after getting acclimated into Adelman's system. But this was a good trade for the Rockets.

Oh, I don't think he'll be the second scoring option. It's still Paul and West as the top two. Who knows, they may also get some production out of the SG position and Ariza may be the 4th scorer. HOWEVER, what I think Ariza does bring is some athleticism and defense that will improve the team. And given the state of the NBA today, his contract isn't horrible.
