We've known this since he got here. How do you keep him in shape and interested?

Sorry I’m old fashioned, but it’s shameful to expect a consummate pro like CJ to go along with tanking.
The very best we can hope for is better luck with injuries and significant improvement next season. No future allstar is in the draft that will turn this team around 180 degrees in one season.

Before the win yesterday I saw it mentioned that a loss would officially eliminate the Pels from the Playin. Once that happens it’s probably a lot easier to sell the players on shifting focus to player development.

I don’t expect CJ to tank. I expect the Pels to limit his minutes (especially when he’s on a heater) in favor of “seeing what they have in the young guys”.

Reeves should be playing 25+ minutes a night at this point, not getting DNP’s. Look at the Raptors, no starters are playing 30 minutes and they are resting at least one starter a night while holding Ingram out. They are playing 2-way guys 30+ minutes.

Meanwhile Willie is allowed to play Zion, Trey, and CJ 30+ minutes in a totally unnecessary win against the Clippers. Trey is averaging nearly 36 minutes per game in a lost season.

There is absolutely no reason he should be playing that many minutes.

The big difference between the Pels and the other 5 teams in the bottom of the standings are that the Pels expect to compete next year. Their roster was decimated by injury this year. To that point, games like last night do matter. Zion was fantastic. He took over and was the most dominant player on the floor in a game with Leonard and Harden playing. Karlo got good minutes in a real game environment. He is developing rapidly at this time.

The Pelicans were never going to finish in the bottom 3 if Zion was healthy to close the season. They still have a 4 game cushion to remain in 4th worst position over the Nets and Raptors. The Pels are 5-5 in their last 10 games, the Raptors are also 5-5 in their last 10 games, the Nets are 2-8. The Nets did just have a win over the Lakers over the weekend.

I believe the Pels will continue to allow this team to develop over the next 10 or so games with the 4 game cushion they currently have. Zion is playing arguably the best ball of his career, Trey continues to develop, and guys like Karlo are really coming along. That development is hindered if Zion isn't playing. I do think the team will shut down Zion, CJ, and Trey if that 4 game cushion shrinks or once they get down to the very end of the season.

Playing Karlo makes a ton of sense, but so does playing other younger guys like Hawk and Reeves. I can see playing Brown a bit to see if you have any interest in a small contract for him. Missi needs reps. Murphy, CJ and Zion do not. Their minutes should be limited. Even a player like Brooks and Bamba should get a little run to see what you have.
