Hornets not just looking to "dump" pick #10

Sources close to the process say the Hornets have been dangling the 10th pick in trade, mainly to see what their second selection in the first round can fetch.

The buzz in Chicago during the Draft Combine was that the Hornets wanted a lot in return for the 10th pick, and that could include the absorbing of some unfavorable contracts – Emeka Okafor and Trevor Ariza get mentioned a lot – but more importantly any deal needs to return draft assets down the road.

Most teams that are holding on to more than one first round pick are trying to deal the lesser pick this year in exchange for a second round pick this year and a future first rounder down the road. The Hornets seem to be looking at something similar.

Sources close to the situation say the team is not trying to shed dollars as much as they are trying to reshape the roster. Don’t expect them to “dump” guys like Okafor or Ariza just for cap space or to dump their contracts.

Not sure where this is coming from. The 10th pick is too valuable to do that. Besides, Okafor's contract becomes an assest in a year or two as an expiring for teams trying to sign big FAs or even for us if we want to sign a big FA.

If they're switching spots and picking up a 2nd and/or future picks, the following teams qualify-

Milwaukee (12 and 42)
Philadelphia (15, 45, 54)
Minnesota (18, 58)
Orlando (19, 49)
Denver (20, 38, 50)
Boston (21, 22, 51)
Atlanta (23, 43)
Cleveland (24, 33, 34)

The best bet for a trade here is Philly, which is apparently chomping at the bit to move up in the draft.

If they're trading the 10 for a 2nd this year, a 1st next year, and a player to come in now, the following teams quality-

Atlanta
Boston
Chicago
Cleveland
Denver
Detroit
Indiana
Minnesota
Orlando
Philly
Phoenix
San Antonio
Toronto
Utah
Washington

Since we'd be giving up #10 overall this year, I'd think the limit of protections on the 2013 1st pick would probably be Top 5 at best.

It's too exhausting rooting for another team to lose all season

Can someone explain to me the rivers hype? Is it the whole Duke/Doc's son thing?

Isn't next years draft not supposed to be that great?

Also, looking at the history of guys picked 10th, it's likely we will get a good player if we take the BPA.

I wouldn't call it hype, he was a true freshman that scored nearly 16 ppg. He's a scorer and a hybrid guard player with good size and good athleticism.

There were multiple reports that we were trying to use the #10 to move Okafor or Ariza.

Of course as they are want to do, the national media interpreted it as we would use the #10 to just dump their contracts, instead of the reality of us actually considering #10 and Okafor/Ariza as assets that could get something in return.

I get that but we don't need another 2 guard if we want to keep EG.

Eta I guess hype wasn't the right word.

Yeah you're right... I just really want a lottery pick next season. I seriously think this team makes the playoffs.. or a similar run like Houston..which is not a good thing.

All I know is people were hating on him like crazy until he came in for a workout and Monty said some nice things about him. Then he all of a sudden became like the best player in the draft.

I think he's good and could become a good pro. But he's being hyped like crazy right now.

BPA... i'm all about it. Rivers can easily be a James Harden type bench player.

A lottery pick next season would be nice...but we have two this season, in by all accounts a deeper draft. Any pick we get would be at least top 7 protected the first year, so there would be really no point.

Correct, next year's draft is supposed to be underwhelming.

The only plus to getting Milwaukee's pick is that their roster sucks, meaning it will likely be a good pick. The only players worth a crap offensively appear to be Jennings and Monta Ellis.

I hope Demps learned his lesson on listening to Monty from Jerryd Bayless.

I agree. I'm not worried about the position so much. Just get talented basketball players.

I just don't know if Rivers will be the BPA. If Monty and Dell think he is, then they know far more than me.
