Said if the baton gets passed in the future then so be it, but right now Zion is a 19 year old kid and this is Jrue’s team.

Let’s fricking roll, sons!

I mean that sounds great and I love Jrue.

But signing Jrue isn’t selling 4500 season tickets overnight. We got the fricking juggernaut tonight.

Brilliant

Zion won’t be labeled with being the savior (though he is) so he can just focus on becoming a better basketball player

That wasn’t why he said that. He doesn’t want that mindset to be passed down to Zion or the media or the fan base just yet. Zion’s first two years are crucial because he CAN grow into a top 10 NBA player in that time frame if he works hard and has the right mentality.

Giving him such high expectations, and us as well, would only lead to unwarranted pressure on him and lead us to be miserable as fans because he’s not a mega star in his rookie year. All those factors could inhabit his growth as a player. Griff, by saying this is Jrue’s team” basically is putting the pressure on Jrue, who can take it. He’s the vet, he’s the leader and he can take that pressure of trying to be the face of the franchise until Zion is ready

Jrue is going to hope this works out as much as anyone. He can lead them to their potential and is still young enough to get a ring out of it once they reach their potential.

I mean I don’t expect Griffin to come out and say “he’s going to save the franchise” but that definitely doesn’t mean he won’t be labeled that way.

I’m not. Any reasonable fan shouldn’t assume this team will make the playoffs for at least two years and shouldn’t expect Zion to be an All-Star or Top 10 player straight from jump

If any of the above happens this year or next year then that’s gravy. But it shouldn’t be expected. Griff is trying to temper people’s expectations. Whether you think it’s naive or not is subjective. It’s what he’s trying to do and it’s a smart move

That’s fine and I agree with all of that.

But like Melvin said don’t be naive. Zion is absolutely being viewed as the savior of the franchise by the vast majority of the fan base. No amount of GM/coach speak is going to change that.

You give 100 nba personnel guys the option to have Jrue or Zion and 100 are taking Zion. Again, I’m not knocking Jrue and I feel like he’s the absolute leader of this team. He’s the glue that can hold this young group together. But I hope Zion hears this and knows that soon, VERY SOON he will grab this team by the horns and it will be his. That is what will separate him from great but hollow talents like AD.

Also I completely disagree with it being unreasonable to expect the playoffs for at least two years. With this being Jrue’s team, I’d bet a mortgage payment that a 29 year old, competitive, borderline all star wouldn’t be cool with that mindset when he has two top 2 picks several years into their careers, and the most hyped prospect since Lebron signing up.

He's saying all the right things to protect Zion. Everyone knows this is the Zion era.

Exactly. He’s trying to protect him as much as he can. Zion could save NOLA basketball but Griff wants to try and hold that mantle away from him so Zion doesn’t stress over it and just focuses on the game

Yeah I am a worried the casual fan base that has cropped up in the last month(which I am all for) are setting expectations too high.

Very rarely do young teams like this make the playoffs the first year. And this is going to be a particularly tough West again with how wide open everything is and how many teams think they can make a realistic run.

Denver, Portland, Utah, Golden State, SA, Thunder, Clippers, Lakers, and The Rockets all have pretty strong claims to being playoff teams. I just hope the fanbase can be ok with an exciting Zion season and 30-40 wins.

Funny you mention Denver because I could see a similar trajectory

They were stick in the mid 30s with tons of young talent then the last couple years became very good.

Just watched the whole 20min. press conference and Griff has me sold! Not one bit of criticism on anything he said. Excited for the BRIGHT future of this franchise, and the way he was basically able to start from scratch in 1 year without making us look like a bottom feeder out of the gate.

Zion is the face of this franchise. Zion sells tickets and jerseys. Players will determine their leader not Griff.

Players don't determine their leader by number of tickets and jerseys sold though, ya doofus.
