Going into the season, the ceiling was a 5th seed

And, that remains very attainable.

I can see this season turning into the '14-15 season all over again.

Going back, it was, "what will it take for MW to keep his job?" And, the answer was simple: Make the playoffs. Not only did he do that, he did it was a great run in the final 2 months of the season. That was the most exciting run this team put together since the '07-08 season.

We now (again) have a playoff team. I'll admit that being a playoff team this season was more of an expectation than it was in '14-15, but again, finishing in 5th place would be exceeding expectations.

So, let's say that's where we end up. Does Dell Demps do the same thing to Alvin that he did to Monty? Surely, there's more to it than this such as keeping players here with contract extensions after this season, but on the surface, this could be a very interesting decisions for Demps and maybe perhaps the ownership team if they decide to clean house.

In a perfect world, I'd like to see us as a 5th seed and Gentry still fired but by the decision(s) of the players...further incentive for AD and Boogie to continue on with this core.

Yeah, that's never going to happen.

If we make the 5th seed, Demps isn't going to fire a coach after he finally makes the playoffs for a second time. He'd look even more incompetent than we believe him to be. Especially if we get the 5th seed. Demps would be fired immediately afterwards if he does that.

Also, the players seem to love Gentry so they won't ask for him to be fired. Especially if we get the 5th seed. Maybe they'd turn on him if we missed the playoffs? But idk.

So in conclusion, you can just give up on that dream right now. Right now, we either keep Boogie, AD, and Gentry. Or, we fire Gentry and potentially lose Boogie. And if we lose Boogie, then AD's days here are numbered because he'll want out at his first chance after seeing his bff give up on the team.

I agree with this. And, that's where my hope stood...that Boogie talks AD into them taking over and hiring who they want as coach. I don't think it's ideal, but it's plausible. And, of course, that's a problem within itself, but it keeps our 2 best players together.

Demps has said he and Gentry are tied at the hip. It'd have to be some very strange circumstances for Gentry to go and Demps not go with him.

Boogie is an All Star starter, I think he's pretty happy with this system that lets him put up such big stats. Assuming the team stays on track for the playoffs, it's really hard for me to see a regime change this offseason unless it's Cal.

As much as I dislike Gentry, there's no way we fire him in Boogie's walk year. If we lock up Boogie long term this offseason, then Gentry enters his true "put up or shut up" year.

Only chance Gentry loses his job is if the team decides to cash out and trade Boogie for assets or some kind of deal like Cleveland for Love and the Brooklyn pick. That would MAYBE give the team the freedom to can him after this year and start fresh.

I honestly never understand this line of thinking

Well, months ago we thought the ceiling was X so we should be happy we are close to X

Well, people didn't expect the Saints to make the NFC title game before the season. Does that mean that nobody should call out Williams or the coaching staff for bad play calling and execution when they were ten seconds away from advancing?

Who cares what you or some others thought the ceiling was months ago. Evaluate based on now.

I never understand why people go back to this well.

5th seed in this stacked Western conference is exceeding expectations if you ask me. Also, I have a feeling the Spurs are gonna fall of a cliff.

Nawwwwww I disagree. OKC and Minny are legit-- they're figuring out how to play with each other. Gonna be solid by playoff time

So two great teams and three "solid" teams plus a bunch of mediocre teams equates to STACKED for you?

Go back and check your Western Conference history, when it took nearly 50 wins just to get into the playoffs

the comparison was to compare the firing and potential firing of 2 coaches.

why was Monty fired? The heat to win now was too hot. why shouldn't gentry be fired with the same justification?

I'd take the top 5 in the West (healthy version of the Spurs of course) in a 7 game series against the Cavs or Boston.

And looks like you're gonna need mid 40s to make it this year

Yeah, the WC may be stacked at the top, but not overall. There is going to be a close to .500 team making the playoffs from the WC.

Regardless of performance relative to expectation at the beginning of the season, some fans are frustrated because of the shite losses to bottom dwellers Hawks, Mavs, Magic, Kings, and Grizz. We have 3 players who combine to average 70 pts a game and 2 starters in the allstar game. We should not be losing to those teams.

So Dell can hire yet another mediocre coach? Don't see the point. Might as well just get of Dell while you are at it.

I get what you are saying, but our top heavy team is really top heavy.

Anyone who saw the game last night when we put the subs in (and got owned) can see that we have players getting sizable minutes off the bench that would be getting Diallo minutes (or less) for a really good team.

Boogie, AD, and Jrue are a really good core, but after that we have what? 3 maybe 4 players that play well enough to deserve minutes? And even most of them probably should be playing fewer than they are, and/or are playing out of their primary position half the game.

After Rondo, Moore, Miller, and Cunningham I cringe anytime I see anyone else on the floor. Until we get Hill back and another reasonable guard at the very least this team has some gaping holes especially on defense.

because we've experienced first hand what can happen when you fire a coach after a playoff appearance (Alvin Gentry)

The reports surrounding his firing suggested that he and Demps got locked in a power struggle and he issued a Him or Me ultimatum to Loomis. I firmly believe if there hadn't been a power struggle to force Loomis to do something that Monty would still be here with Demps.

Unfortunately, making the same mistake twice is a recipe for disaster for gms
