Watched that Cavs-Celtics game today...and uhhhh Greg Monroe might be terrible.
Dude got pretty much a whole 4Q of run as it was out of hand by then and what i saw from Monroe did not inspire a ton of hope.
-On one possession, Ante Zizic blew by him.
-On another, he got switched onto a guard who drilled a 3 in his face and he didn't even bother to put a hand up. Hand down man down.
-Dude's lazy with his screens (compared to what i was seeing from Horford and Baynes).
-He looks slow out there and cannot defend the perimeter whatsoever.

I was advocating for him after the buyout but it seems he wouldn't have added much to our front court except on paper. Everything i've always thought was confirmed today. Lazy, $ grabbing, bum. Let's set the record straight that this team probably wouldn't be better with Monroe on it.

He would have cost $2 million. That's a pebble not a bullet.

You could look at the Net Rating the Suns had with him in the lineup and see that he wasn't gonna be a difference maker.

Oh, he was a difference maker... And not in a good way.

Because all everybody wants the new shiny toy. They don't want you to mess with the aesthetic of their new toy.

Zach Lowe has argued that AD is the kind of player that can cover up for Monroe and make him work. We basically had the stretch version of Monroe playing next to AD with Ryno and that pairing was a net positive most of the time. Believe me, I'm happy Okafor is working out because I think he's got a good fit and should help Diallo improve, but I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that Monroe would have been terrible here.

And it's not just theoretical like Lowe was musing, I think Ryno is a decent bad defender comp that we've seen work out with AD as a net positive. The only question is can AD fit with a 17 points per 36 inside scorer like Monroe as well as he fit with a 17 points per 36 outside scorer like Ryno.

So you're saying Monroe's minutes would have had to have exactly correlated with ADs? That defeats a lot of the purpose of bringing him over

While AD can make up for a lot of deficiencies at the other big spot, that doesn't mean you should be okay with handing him an anchor to carry on that end of the floor. Also, Anderson's offensive game is much better suited to this NBA than Monroe's. He opened the lane for Davis' roll game. Monroe would not.

I agree and I'm happy we got Okafor. He seems to be working out and I'm hoping he's got enough left in the tank to stick around until Boogie is back. I just think the assumption is wrong that Monroe looking bad in Boston where there isn't an AD to cover for him means he'd also be a disaster here.
