You just made the early- career struggles of so many top prospects the last 15 years make perfect sense. To me at least. This sounds completely possible and, while selfish and borderline evil, it's makes sense as a business strategy.

I agree with this 100% and have some, albeit little, insider knowledge. I don't have Pelicans or Zion specific knowledge but agency knowledge and how far that protectionism runs.

Yep, like you, I do not have zion specific info but I have represented players who have played on the same team as players represented by Klutch, CAA etc.
It is hard for people to understand this mentality. It is counterintuitive but it happens every day.

NBA max contract doing work. Zion is getting a max deal b/c he's worth a lot more than the max deal. If the NBA didn't have max contracts you could argue he's hurting his value, but since that decrease still makes his value fall above the max threshold, it's irrelevant.

Bingo.

Yep.

It is a frustrating industry. While there are certainly good agents out there who 100% want the best for their clients, those agents aren’t the ones with the max contract clients.

Here’s how I describe it….which is a harder task, negotiating a max contract or calling every single team and convincing them that one of your guys in the G-League is worth a 10-day or 2-way contract?

The agents that I would consider to be really good at their job are those that have succeeded at the harder tasks of getting teams to look at fringe guys for summer league or 10-day contracts.

The mega agents haven’t really had to deal with that and a lot of their lesser known clients (who are with that agency bc of the brand associated with the NBA all stars) end up getting screwed.

I'm not saying it's nothing, but I was kind of surprised with Zach Lowe's take on it. He said Christian Clark's article was trying to be a gotcha article but it really just rehashed a bunch of old news talking about things in the bubble and he pretty much glossed over it and went right to talking about the roster.

To me the more depressing end of things is there's probably no redemption path for Griff. He seems like someone desperate to prove he belongs somewhere he clearly doesn't, in the players lives, and there appears to be a lot of ego issues that get in the way of doing the job right.

I'm curious about what the reason is behind the timing of this? Is this something Clark has been working for a while that finally came to fruition, or did he get fed this story by the anti-Griff faction hoping they can push him out? Alaskan Assassin doin work?

Alternatively CAA gets him with a nutritionist trainer they like and have a working relationship shop with who wouldn’t then steer him to other age venues for fear of losing those connections with CAA.
