Preface:
1) the Lakers have fans in most small markets. noted.
2) New Orleans isn’t a super transient city, like Houston or Atlanta. The arena is full of locals
3) yes superstar players run the league. Many people cheer for players over franchises. The Lakers-with Shaq, Kobe, & now LeBron will have their contingents here.
4) I recognize the Pels fans in the building were incredibly loud.

That being said, when does this franchise get that support it deserves?

My number 1 pet peeve in the NBA are home crowds cheering for the opposing team/star player.

I might go to watch them play, might even give them a respectful ovation for an incredible performance, but not cheering made buckets so early.

And to the guy standing behind the announce team in a LeBron jersey, you’re the worst.

Win on a consistent basis and you have fewer of those fans. How hard is that for people to figure out?

I watched the Lakers-Celtics game in Boston a couple weeks ago. There were probably as many Laker fans there as there were in Nola tonight. It's not just a New Orleans thing...there's Lakers bandwagoners everywhere.

That being said, I'll never understand those who don't root for their hometown team. It's puzzling.

They Lakers are no different than the Cubs, Yanks, Cowboys, and Steelers. Their brands are much larger than their local markets.

Think about the type of person who cheers for the Lakers. There is no changing that

Lakers fans in Nola are pathetic front runners. Nothing more.

Some may have been Lakers fans for far far far longer than the Pels existed.

Wouldn't expect them to give up their love for their franchise.

Except the Lakers were never their team. That’s what makes them pathetic

Every market has a Lakers and now Lebron-Lakers following

Every.

Even Golden State. Its a players league, the MJ/Shaq following in the 90s was real big.

I guess. They could have built the following because of the colors, a certain player, winning. More than proximity can play into a favorite team.

Speaking of winning, is this year 5 that the Lakers will miss the playoffs?

I remember when the hornets first came to Nola and we played the sixers and there were tons of shitty iverson fanboys.

Trash

As you note, the NBA will always be a player driven league and the big market teams will invariably net the big name players. As far as the NBA not catching on in New Orleans... well... Shinn was a terrible owner. He hired mediocre people to run his team, was cheap, and insisted on dragging the ill-fitting name of Hornets with him. The change to Pelicans helped but... Pelicans is still a terrible name.

This team has only been here since... what... 2003? Only the youngest of you millennial 'baws' have had the benefit of growing up with the NBA in New Orleans. For people 35 and older it's something that they have had to embrace without the benefit of fandom being instilled at youth.

Welcome to the NBA. This is not specific to New Orleans crowds.

It’s hard because New Orleans was a city without a team for a long time.

Some people never ditched the team they rooted for growing up for the Hornets.

I was A kid in the 90s so obviously I was A front runner Bulls/Jordan fan.

Hornets make fandom painful sometimes, but The bulls don’t make it easy either so I am not exactly torn.

its a personality cult not team loyalty...
1st it was kobe, now its lebrony (was CLE, then MIA...)

bulls jerseys in the arena are pretty much extinct now.
but you see plenty of GSW...thats due to curry

I get that to an extent.

I’ve got tons of players I enjoy watching. My favorite players aren’t Pels...but I root for the Pels over them.

Crowd reactions are something players do care about.

Al Horford couldn’t wait to get out of Atlanta to play in front of home crowd that cares.

It is the nature of the NBA, but imo, that percentage is too large in The Blender.
