WSJ: David Crosby Is Making Songs as He Faces the End

Wall Street Journal article
quote:
Aging rock legends don’t generally record a lot of new music. The incentives are low in today’s age of streaming, when money is made on the road as longtime fans come out to hear elderly icons play their hits. So why is David Crosby—77 years old and a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame entrant, as a member of both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash—releasing albums at a feverish clip, dropping four in the past five years?
Mr. Crosby smiles slightly at the question before answering simply, “Because I’m going to die.”
He stirs cream into his coffee and takes a sip before continuing. “I have eight stents in my heart, and I’m going to have a heart attack in the next year or two, and that’ll be it,” he says. “I’m trying to get the music out of my head first.”

Just a song before he goes...

Ahh, the old reverse jinx strategy.

Johnny Cash did the same, although many were covers.

The documentary on Crosby comes out in about two weeks. Should be good.

Yeah, and he had some legit hits unlike David. He is talented but his solo stuff always struck me as just missing something. Cowboy Movie is the exception.

If I Could Only Remember My Name is a masterpiece. Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane basically where the back up band.

That is a good one but its 48 years old. It is also another one that seems like it needs just a little more like a dash of salt added to a meal being cooked. It adds a point to the solo argument but doesn't add anything to his latest material. His only good solo album.

In 1984 CSN was in Hartford. I was a young kid and it was full of old hippies. During Suite Judy Blue Eyes I was dancing in the isle on Crosby’s side of the stage. Everyone else was seated. Crosby spotted me and walked around some equipment to the side of the stage and looked up and fist pumped me. It was short and sweet but it left an impression on this kid and I will always love Crosby. Now I’m the old in the crowd.
