Would you agree with me if I told you that...

Elton John and Billy Joel are the greatest pianists in rock and pop music history?
Add the fact that both are also great singers, great song writers (Elton is a song writer, Bernie Taupin is a lyricist), both have great stage presence and both knew how to crank Top 20 hits.
I cannot think of another artist that can match up to them, piano wise. Maybe Stevie Wonder, but did he have the amount of music hits in his catalogue?
Going far back I can think of Ray Charles, Fats Domino and many other belonging to a band. But as solo artists who else?

I doubt Elton John would agree with you. I know Billy Joel wouldn’t.

Jerry Lee Lewis would definitely like a word with you.

I somewhat agree with you, as long as you are talking about the early years for both. Both of these guys turned into shells of their former selves. Lounge act, pop tunes or Broadway performers. But in the early years, they both could be called the best rock n' roll, singing, song writing and performing powerhouses. After Turnstiles, B. Joel went downhill, and after Goodbye, Yellowbrick Road, Elton went downhill.
Burndown The Mission and Captain Jack are pure genius.

You must not listen to Funk or Soul music. At all.
And I know you've never heard of Jordan Rudess.

Most successful as a pianist? Yes. Greatest is too subjective. Little Richard, Jerry Lee has to be at the top. I'm a fan of Ben Folds. Do you consider Paul McCartney as a pianist? How about some Barry Manilow?

Jerry Lee Lewis...
I'm sorry. I cannot go there. He was a great entertainer, yes, and in his day he was matched only by a few, but to say that he was a great pianist? Nah, I don't think so. I'd have to go with Elton John and Billy Joel over him. Actually, I'd even put Rick Wright from Pink Floyd over him, Rick Wakeman blows all of them away, Geoff Downs...
