New Will Johnson out today -- streaming in full here with review

Its just about the most Will Johnson-y record I have ever heard. Those familiar with him will know EXACTLY what that means. As the review mentions, with Centro-matic done, he pulls some of the chunkier guitars and noise into the solo project, instead of just the quiet ballads. Ive only given it a spin or two and I like it a lot. Im not sure it beats out Swam City Vampires for me -- but its pretty solid.

Crickets? No will johnson fans around?

(or centromatic, or south san gabriel, or his stuff with jim james and the new multitudes, or johnson & molina, or the overseas record with david bazan or....)

I used to go see Centro-matic about once a month. Best show of theirs I ever saw is when South San Gabriel "opened". The lo-fi stuff was really powerful live. I've been less enamored with Will's solo stuff. This album is good but I probably wont listen to it much. I may go see him when he plays Dallas.

Saw him open up for the Drive-By Truckers a few years back. He was solid. Your post prompted me to listen to Burning Neon, which is a really good album. Tried to stream the new one on Soundcloud but no dice. Will try again later.

burning neon is pretty much the only record THIS will johnson isnt on. i think there are two guys by the same name.

though i think you have the right guy for the DBT tour. hes in that same circle of musicians and ive seen them together before.

His recent years of touring have mostly been living room shows which is a pretty cool experience ( for example)

i find when his music drags, it can really drag along... but when he hits the mark its EXCELLENT. swan city was easily my favorite of the solo albums.

thats when hes really won me over.

Common sentiment lately MB

if you've done any of the Will Johnson shows in Nola the last few years, we certainly have met.... and I'd venture even if we don't know each other we'd at least recognize each other at a show based on the number I remember us posting we've both been at.

I loved Centro-Matic... One of my all-time favorites... South San Gabriel, to a lesser extent and then Will's solo stuff, can be hit and miss...

Will and Robert Pollard are probably neck and neck as the two most prolific songwriter of the last couple of decades...

It seems he usually tours, lately.. via that living room setup and that just doesn't appeal to me..

He's opening for John Moreland at Thalia Hall soon... not sure if I'll go..

Him and JM would be a good show

Sounds like a centro thread would be enjoyed -- what's everyone's favorite? I normally pop on the centro/Ssg split that I have on my phone simply cause it's convenient

Free download of that split with some greatest hits for those curious about a jumping off
