I honestly cant say that I remember hearing anything that hes done.

When I heard him say "Can you see me? Can you see me? Put yo' visine on!" I knew he was something special. I never thought of putting on visine.

I had only heard Drake's name, and I had never actually cared to find out more about him. I don't make it a point to keep up with the latest pop music. This thread inspired me to youtube the fellow.

I clicked on the first video at the top--Started from the Bottom. I couldn't make it all the way through. What in the actual frick? The beat was generic pop rap. Some drums. Some effects. Nothing that distinguishes it from everything else out there. Very repetitive.

The lyrics were also close to nothing but repetitive. And not even clever. "Started from the bottom. Now we here." Got it. Cool. Want to say something worth thinking about, please? At some point your boy starts talking a singing kind of way aided greatly by auto tune. Not real singing that might be an impressive display of talent at all. It was some banal shite that again is hardly worth thinking about.

This brings me to the one highlight of this music video. The one saving grace of to what I imagine all of Drake's music is about. That fine arse hell babe. That's the only reason that I can see liking this music. It's brainless club music to use as an excuse to grind up against some chicks leg in a club.

That's all I see, and there's nothing necessarily wrong with that. Just don't go acting like it is any better than any of the other club music going on out there. It serves a purpose when a young person is out in those environments if those environments are the type of thing that you are into. But the music has no value at all beyond that.

A person can tell an the general style from one song. Instrumentation, song form, even tendencies toward lyrical content can be surmised from one song. The fact that Drake thought that even one song was necessary for such banal content with such a simple and base delivery speaks plenty enough for me to have expectations for the rest of his catalogue.

Maybe it's a particularly bad song, but the assumptions I made probably hold up for most of his catalogue. If they don't then make a response that has some substance.

So let me ask you (OP and 337Guy), what are your thoughts on this. This song was fairly recent.

Can you, with serious face, tell me that Drake sounds better than this?

To me, these new cats don't come close to these rappers. Not even close. That's not because I grew up in that era either. I'm not out of touch with what's going on in this industry (I work in the music industry btw). I'm very much open to new rappers IF they have talent and not MEDIA / Label HYPE. Drake seems like a puppet rapper, with some label exec pulling strings. Almost like dare I say...Vanilla Ice!
