I think he makes a valid point. The legend goes that John Mayer recorded this song in his dorm room at Berklee on a bet that he couldn't rhyme the word orange in a song. You think this took him more than an hour to do?

Okay, so songwriters can intentionally dumb down their music? I don't see your point. Sure, a person CAN dumb down their music for the lowest denominator (looking at you, Green Day), but rock music has a lot more that goes into producing it then finding a drum beat, adding some chirps, 2 scratches, and rhyming randomly over the top. That's if they don't just rip off a beat or loop.

Haven't read thread, but most "jam bands" allow taping and free trading of their live shows. Kinda like a mixtape

Where as some rappers; Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Eminem, Lupe... guys I think are the top tier of rap music, they take their time. They don't feel the need to show their face every day. They show it when they feel like they have something to say.

Lupe has put out 5 mixtapes. But the other examples are good. I would toss Big Boi in there as well.

Lil Wayne has put out 18 mixtapes. That's probably a little overboard.

My point is that the Mayer song came as a result of him and his buddy basically writing improv songs one day. What's to stop him and other artists from doing this...and then releasing the songs for free? Isn't that the rock equivalent to a mixtape?

Mix tape tracks can be made quickly and easily. Most can be put together in a hotel room or home studio and really don't require more than a few people. Other genres don't have that luxury. Plus other genres would require more creativity. People like rappers as much for their flow and beat, than they do for their lyrics. Mix tapes are just like practice for a rapper, and they can easily record them and release them and do it for next to nothing. That's why others don't do it.

Can someone explain the differences between a mixtape and a regular studio album? Some metal magazines and websites put out free compilation albums and Scion puts out a lot of free EPs and some compilations from different bands. I don't know if those count as mixtapes. Jagermeister used to give away compilation cds with songs from all their sponsored bands at the Jager tours

Mixtapes are (legally) available to download for free. The term "mixtape" is pretty much exclusive to hip hop music. Bands from other genres can give away music for free -- e.g. Angels And Airwaves gave away their second album for free -- but they likely wouldn't call it a mixtape.
