It seems to me like mixtapes are a promotional tool. I thought that other genres did create mixtapes for young unestablished bands that are trying to gain attention.
The reason that there are more hip hop mixtapes is because they are generally easier to make. Creating a quick hip hop beat and then putting lyrics over it seems easier than writing music from the instruments up.

I don't hate hip hop. I hate the garbage that they're selling as hip hop these days. Same goes with country. Sure, there are some decent artists out there, but the majority are not.
I agree. I just listen to the stuff I like.

For an established artist, mixtapes are a promotional tool. But for an artist trying to make a name for himself, they are a means for getting heard.

2. That said, hip-hop has produced a lot of albums that meet your "journey with stops" criteria. Listen to "my beautiful dark twisted fantasy" or "ATLiens" or "Things Fall Apart"
The Roots and Outkast should be left out of this conversation. They are way more the exception than the norm.

you can do that for ANY genre

Because they're awesome? What'd you think I was gonna list albums that were terrible?

Yeah, but some people actually consider 2 Chainz talented.

Trent Reznor has released full albums of entirely original music for free.

i've been on a big Tyga kick lately and it dawned on me that "damn, his best shite is free" i mean it's not some bootlegg bs, it's got 2 chainz and game and all kinds of features, high production quality, and i just wondered why you don't get these little "gifts" from other genres.

Are either of them considered big players in the mixtape craze?

thanks for the input, really helpful.
No problem. It's probably the best thing to happen to this abortion of a thread.

So we can agree that 2 Chainz, Kenny Chesney, Kid Rock, and Nickleback are all garbage?

Too many artists do this trying to remain relevant, when it actuality it causes people to become bored with them. We see this all the time in rap. There's always a new flavor of the month going on.
The way I see it is, the best only release stuff when they feel good about what they have. I'd at least do it this way if I were some big time artist. Taking time away, stepping back and putting out quality over quantity will get a far greater response from fans/listeners.
