Why do you think we listen to the music we listen too.

What do you think is the biggest reason for the musical preference you enjoy. For me I think going to Bonnaroo 2005 as a 14 year old showed me what great music was and the experience that could be had at concerts. I saw widespread panic, Dave Matthews Band, Sts9 and many other things that definitely shaped what I'am into today such as String Cheese Incident. I'll also throw out Radiohead 2006 Bonnaroo as one of the greatest nights of my life.

What about you guys?

No idea, possibly because of my dad.

My pops showed me the music from his time, which lead me to explore more from that time period.

My best friend's older brother is a big wook so he showed us that type of music and a various amount of dr00gs. I became a big fan and started to dive into that more.

Other than that, just being shown music from other people and exploring from there.

typically our formative years are the years where we think the music was the best... ages 12-18

so wherever that puts you

Wrong.

If anything, I'd say mid high school/college years like age 16-22 is when someone truly develops their taste.

12 years old? I don't think so, mon.

My Dad was the initial influence. I grew up listening to southern rock and progressive rock with my Dad. Every time my Mom would leave he would crank up the volume on the stereo.

With the music I listened to with him, I was always drawn to the darker sounding songs/albums. In middle school I discovered metal. In eighth grade I was waiting for the bus when a kid introduced me to Pantera and it was all down hill from there.

My Brother in Law introduced me to Stevie Ray Vaughan's music when I was 16 or so. I've pretty much gravitated to Blues type Rock ever since.

My dad's really into music, especially classic rock, blues and reggae

My older brother got into a lot of stuff in like 8th and 9th grade, like Phish

Then drugs in high school

Then the amount of different stuff I listened to exploded in college because I was around a lot of cool brahs with good taste, and the drugs

Learning to play different musical instruments since high school has definitely changed my taste in music.

Imo, musical tastes are a combination of what is exposed to you during your impressionable years, and also different personality types are drawn to different genres.

Honestly MTV has had the biggest influence on my tastes. I grew up watching Van Halen, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Ozzy, etc videos and always wanted something heavier. Eventually I moved on to Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, and heavier stuff that I saw on Headbanger's Ball. My parents and friends have had zero effect on my tastes, quite the opposite actually. Its part of my rebellious nature I guess.

From my generation and on (Napster launched when I was 10) the internet plays a HUGE role in the whole scheme of music. I know it is obvious, but am just throwing it out there.

I think about this a lot. Here's what I got.

Memories-Growing up, my dad loved 70's and 80's music. My love for that music comes from hearing it a lot in my early life. I think a lot of that music takes me back to those moments of my childhood, being carefree, riding with the windows down around town and just spending time with my dad.

Familiarity-I got saved at age 7. I grew up in churches where we sang lots of hymns. As I grew older, I came to love them both for their messages and their simplistic beauty.

Personal meaning-I started going to a small Christian school in junior high. There, I was introduced to contemporary Christian, specifically Casting Crowns. The sound was good, and the messages spoke to me as well. This would soon become the music I listened to almost exclusively.

Art form- At a Winter Jam concert, there was an advertisement for a Lecrae, a Christian rapper. I didn't immediately love it, but my best friend listened to him a lot, and so I fell in love with Christian hip-hop, which is my favorite music today. I believe it is one of the most artistic forms of music.

Region- Of course, growing up in the south, I heard a lot of country music, southern rock, and southern gospel, and have respect for each genre and enjoy songs from them.

Research-Just through research, I like negro spirituals and some classical sounds. Went to Troy's fall choral concert tonight, which featured mostly latin songs, and I loved it as well.
