Just listened to the Little Steven's Underground Garage episode paying tribute to the Ed Sullivan Show.

Learned a fascinating bit o' trivia.

Due to lack of interest from a Capitol Records executive (he hated both rock & roll and harmonicas), that label did not release the Beatles' early singles and they ended up on a Chicago Blues/R&B label called Vee Jay. They didn't sell -- then.

Later, after the spectacular success of the Sullivan Show and "I Want To Hold Your Hand" going to #1, Vee Jay tried to release an album's worth of Beatles material they had. Capitol sued, and Vee Jay lost not only the album, but in a related development also lost their right to 10% of all money from the Beatles records for the next four years, because they hadn't paid back royalties of $859.

Why?

Cause they are the fricking Beatles, that's why.

Seriously, sheesh.

to say it is more innovative than anything the Beatles did is pure lunacy (IMHO). Badge is actually a better song than White Room.

No, it was EC and Harrison (well, officially), but the mention of it in this thread is pretty cheeky.

White Room is better and more innovative than anything the Beatles ever wrote? It was recorded in the middle of 1967.

Notice nobody even tries to dispute the initial proposition (because any attempt to argue otherwise would be ludicrous). Just ad hominems and "OMG no wai I ? the Beatles 4 eva!"

What are we supposed to argue about? Who is "better"? That takes us into pointless bobbyray territory. IMHO The Monkees are better (i.e. I'd rather listen to them) than Led Zeppelin. Nothing you say is going to change my mind.

And what exactly is meant by "innovative"? I've already posted "Rain", which uses backwards tapes, droning Eastern rhythm and multiple drum tracks, and was released in 1966.

Are you saying the guitar work is superior? No one have ever claimed Clapton wasn't >>>>> Harrison, even George himself.

Exactly, there's nothing to argue about because it'd be preposterous.

The Beatles less than 10 year run and what they accomplished in that short span is the very definition of innovative.

And I love Cream.
