As far as I know, both were only vocalist. Both were very good. On Whitney's first album, there were pa few flat notes, however she became a world class singer over the years. Her Grammy performances were world class and her National Anthem is still my favorite, although that has more to do with the arrangement than the vocals. I don't know that I ever heard a flat note on a Carey album. Of course that could be because of auto tune.

Would Whitney have ever done something like this?

I'd go with Whitney, but I really don't care for their type of singing/belting. Sometimes, less is more.

Whitney was better at freebasing.

Mariah was better at orgys.

I am not sure why Whitney is getting all of the votes. Your question was who was/is more talented, not who is the better singer. Mariah has had success as a singer, writer and producer. She has way more talent than Whitney ever dreamed of having. Vocal wise? That is debatable. I am not sure there is enough to separate them. Downvote away.
