Artist would be easier than band but I'm going to have to go with The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Ramstein is very good and I've seen them live... Fantastic pyrotechnics.

I think Uncle Tupelo's 4 records trump Wilco & Son Volt combined. I'm also of the opinion that Wilco is the best American band of the past ~20 years.
