They say a true master knows it, does it, and can teach it. As the master he is, Hancock is passing it on by being involved with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. My 15 y/o son had the honor of spending some time with him in this regard.

A guy who might be the closest to Bernie Hancock in the modern music scene is Trombone Shorty. He write, arranges, plays multiple instruments as well as sings. The guy does it all as well as gives back to the local community.

Black Francis wasn't mentioned? I'm not a big fan of the Frank Black/solo stuff, maybe I need to listen to it more? There was no better band around IMO when the pixies were together.
