Where does Mark Knopfler rank as a guitarist?

I like Clapton a lot, but think he is among the most overrated guitarists of my lifetime. Not that he is bad, he is really good, but he is definitely not as great as he is made out to be. . .

Agree there. Knopfler, on the other hand, has possibly the best tone of any guitarist I've ever heard. Mikael Åkerfeldt is my next best thing.

Good way to put it. Not flashy like a SRV or Jimi Hendrix but I like his guitar work as much as anyone. He's done a lot of very good music post Dire Straits, usually with other musicians he appreciates. A few top notch Youtubes:

Robert Fripp. This could go on for days. You could also argue that Tom Morello has the best tone. When you reach that tier of ability, you make your tone, be it smooth or course.

So true. Atkins sounds like butter to me.

Just thought of Jeff Beck too. My fave strat sound ever (Gilmour too).
