1991 would be the year. Achy Breaky Heart, Boot Scootin' Boogie, and Garth Brooks.
Chattanooga had a radio station(that my boss insisted on playing at work) that played at least 2 Garth Brooks songs every hour that year. I'm not a big country fan but I'm pretty sure he only had one album out and they played the shite out of it.

Does XM have a station with artists similar to the ones above? I don't have unlimited data on my phone, so can't stream Pandora non-stop while in my truck, but would love to listen while driving. Tired of listening to the mainstream FM country stations. Any recs?

Easy way to do it is find a band or songwriter you like and play their Spotify radio channel. You’ll find so much music you hadn’t heard of that you end up liking. Then follow their radio channel on Spotify.
Rinse repeat?

Xm channel 60 I think is a good station. You should get unlimited data on your phone though!

The irony was that Charlie Rich was a Jazz artist by heart but was told that he had no shot unless he went country.

The Bakersfield sound which was influenced by rock music. It was a direct response to the slick orchestra played Nashville sound of the 60s.

Alabama got country out of the ditch and so did George Strait.
