I know people love to knock it bc of whiny vocals, same 4 chords just capoed around, every song is about the same thing, etc. Which is true when it comes to generic pop punk, but there is alot of stuff out there that is just fantastic. I personally love pop punk bc I can connect with it on such an emotional level and the board's opinion isn't gonna change that. I'm just curious if there's anybody else on here I can discuss with and can show me some stuff I might not know.

IT blows. It might be my least form of music. I'd almost rather listen to 1988 Kids Incorporated for extended periods of time than listen to anything by any of those bands.

I loved the Lookout! Records lineup from the early-mid 90's...was my jam for sure. Green Day, Screeching Weasel, Crimpshrine, Mr. T Experience etc.

It's just one of those genres I hate.

Pop punk is ok in moderation. Green Day and maybe a little Blink 182 is about all i can tolerate. The genre itself is kind of a joke since punk is supposed be anti-establishment. "Pop-punk" seems like an oxymoron.

I saw No Doubt at Jazz Fest this year and it felt like they were trying to hard to be punk. Punk is supposed to dirty and mean, while pop is tame and clean for the most part. They could not pull off both. Should just stick to pop.

My favorite pop punk band as of right now
Widely considered the best pop punk band of the new generation

Here's some examples of what pop punk is now. The older pop punk bands that most of y'all would be familiar with would be Blink, Green Day, Sum 41, New Found Glory, Bowling For Soup, Fountains of Wayne. The genre has changed a lot musically since The Wonder Years pretty much revived it. The instrumentation is much more diverse among the top bands and the song writing is incredible. Dan Campbell from The Wonder Years is a fricking poet and Parker Cannon from The Story so Far is almost like a melodic rapper with all of his rhymes. There still is a ton of generic bands out there trying to imitate Blink but I try to stay away from them.

Ehhh. It's an evolution of punk. Of course the bands aren't going to be as dirty and mean as an NOFX or an Anti-Flag, it's not the same genre. But there are heavy punk influences in pop punk. The syncopated snare beats are still heavy throughout the genre and these guys in these bands grew up on punk and pop punk. The punk mentality is still there its just evolved with people and society.

Fat Wreck Chords had some good bands in the 90s. Lagwagon was pretty good.

I don't like bands like Bayside though.

Before No Doubt was anything they were a ska band. Like the Specials, and Madness.

Yet it's not. The ideology of punk is that of Year Zero or "Tear it down and build it again." The basic rule is that one should not be confined to any set of rules. Which is why punk can cast such a wide tent.

But let's face it, the original pop-punk band is the Ramones. In fact, Joey stated that Green Day came closest to what they were trying to do. Loud, snotty, and fast does not preclude ones love of a catchy hook.

And Screeching Weasel is on my Mt. Rushmore of punk. Pop-punk doesn't mean actually popular, but that the band writes pop hooks. And, as someone who likes hooks, I'm all good with the format in general. I mean, there's a reason Screeching Weasel never was all that mainstream, despite having a good beat that you could dance to. And in what world is NOFX NOT a pop punk band?

Very very informative. I've never thought of NOFX as pop punk though. I've always seen them as punk as Frick, lol.

Well, being a pop-punk band doesn't necessarily mean that a band isn't punk. While the genre does house poseurs and hacks like Good Charlotte, I don't think anyone can criticize the punk bona fides of the Ramones, Screeching Weasel, Pansy Division, or the Muffs.

Have never been a fan. Very limited range and variety. Grows tiresome quickly.
