They were big while I was growing up, and I always thought of them as a typical rinse and repeat emo band. I have always liked "Welcome To The Black Parade" and "Teenagers" but never listened to much outside of their popular singles. I came across this video of them doing a charity event in NJ and holy hell they rock that place.

Starts with Welcome To The Black Parade

I love “Welcome to the Black Parade”, but nothing else from them really stands out to me. It’s all very “color by numbers” along with bands like The Used, Fallout Boy, Mayday Parade, and Panic at the Disco

they were really bad at Voodoo a while back. I enjoy Teenagers and Black Parade though. And if I'm looking for nostalgia I will listen to Helena occasionally. There are definitely worse bands

I’d much rather listen to them than most of the boring “indie” pop crap on alternative radio these days. Bastille, Imagine Dragons, 21 Pilots, Revivalists, Royal teeth, et al all annoy the crap out of me. I just want music that feels like rock n roll played on actual instruments. Is that really too much to ask for?

Yes, it is too much to ask, because when a band like Greta Van Fleet emerges and is doing exactly what you ask, everyone craps on them. I don't get it...I think they are doing good things.

I recently heard someone say that Welcome to the Black Parade is to millennials as Bohemian Rhapsody is to boomers.

I don’t think I’d go quite that far, but it’s pretty damn important. I did say Fun could be this generation’s Queen a few years ago, but I haven’t heard anything noteworthy from that group since.

I am working on putting together a 90s-2000s "pop punk" project and when you try to find popular songs past 2010 that use actual instruments it's nearly impossible outside of Foo Fighters.

I like actually like GVF but the sentiment that they are a carbon copy of Zepplin is fair.

Not quite. Mr. Brightside might be a better comparison but its still far from Bohemian Rhapsody.

If you’re still looking for members, I’d be down to clown on some pop punk. My voice really works best for that, and my main band wants nothing to do with that genre whatsoever. I have a whole bunch of originals in that vein that we can’t play as a result.

As far as post 2010 artists, Mayday Parade, Sum 41’s latest album, Rise Against, Four Years Strong, etc could all be good choices.

Pop punk died in 2005, emo held on for a few years, but indie pop largely took over alt radio some time around 2009/2010 and new rock has largely been completely removed from radio airplay and pop culture relevance. Bro country and electronica took the young white girl demo and weird folk/pop/electronica bands took the radio airplay slots.

I wish I was still in BTR because I would definitely take you up on that. There is definitely a market for that kind of music and some pretty cool venues that would probably be receptive to that kind of music.

I didn't realize that Sum 41 put a new album out. I really like Neck Deep too, they just aren't as well known as most of the bands that started in the 2000s.

Yeah, “War” by Sum 41 dropped last summer. It’s no “Chuck”, but there’s some really great tracks on there. My favorite is “Fake My Own Death”

“Rock” music today that is popular is horrible. The only bands that end up having mainstream success is electronic bands that call themselves rock. Real instruments needs to be in rock music.

Another band that still is playing real instruments with some electronic elements is Bring Me The Horizon.

They got lost in the shuffle a lot but they're a really good band. WTTBP and the album right before it are so good. They put on a good show top.

They get hate for whatever reason, but they were one of the most important bands of the 2000s. They’re all talented and had the charisma of Queen and Bowie combined with punk energy. “Welcome to the Black Parade” is the ultimate misfit anthem.
