For me it's Pepper Keenan. Phenomenal riff-master and, for my money, the best songwriter in all of heavy music. His bluesy style of Sabbath-esqe guitar playing does it for me on every song he's recorded with Corrosion of Conformity.

Plus I love it that a guy with Sabb-Core roots has the potato sack to occasionally play an ES-335 or a Telecaster.

And his bar makes a damn good bloody mary.

In the last 20 years:

Monte Montgomery

Dude can flat out write, sing, and play his arse off!!!

MM - When Will I - Live from Austin City Limits

This is the performance that got me into him and have been a huge fan ever since. For the people that have never heard of him it is more than likely because he was smart and kept total creative control over everything he does by never signing a major label deal. He is in several top lists of greatest guitarists.

In a very close second:

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

Jason will go down as one of the best song writers in history and I went to high school with his drummer, Chad Gamble.

What Freddie Mercury accomplished in studio era he recorded in is nothing short of genius.

Robert Plant. Most iconic rock voice of all time and still at it. Even recorded a great bluegrass album with Alison Krauss.
