Street narratives, having our white boy worlds thrown into the mix of a different socio-economic-racial status is one of the quickest ways to perspective.

Wordplay

Oh and it also evokes feelings of power, fricking the system, machismo, misogyny, decadence, and all the other irreverent values you can think of that feed the ego.

Edit: as a counterpoint to the above paragraph there are definitely positive hip hop artists out there, ie anyone that identifies with Native Tongues

I like 2Pac, Z-Ro, Lil Boosie, Lil' Wayne, and a slew of other rappers/rap groups. I like Jerry Jeff Walker, George Strait, Stoney Larue, Alan Jackson, and plenty of other country artists. I like AC/DC, Guns N Roses, Pink Floyd, 12 Stones, Crossfade, and a lot of other rock bands. I like to throw on some classical music while I study sometimes.

The point is that I like all kinds of music. Almost always because it sounds good and it moves me somehow. That applies to rap as much as any other genre.

There's nothing to keep up with. Hip Hop and Rap sales have been declining for a while.
