Drops of Jupiter

Some of the worst lyrics ever...
I never actually paid them any attention. The song has always just sounded ok to me, especially compared to almost all other pop songs.

remember Drops of Jupiter was one of the first songs I ever illegally downloaded on KaZaa, and it took like three days.

Thanks for this nostalgia post

Hit download before bedtime and wake up to a downloaded song and drag it to my iPod . What a time to be alive

Train is the musical equivalent of somebody you meet and that person is not evil or annoying, no obvious faults you can really point to... but you just fricking hate their guts anyway.

They put on a hell of a show including zeppelin covers.

The lead singer started in an LZ cover band. They released two full albums of LZ covers as well

If it didn’t work they wouldn’t still be around after 20 years it’s paying the bills I guess

Talented musicians who learned how to make a ton of money with canned singles. A talent in its own right but they likely went a few steps too far down the path and lost the art of a truly skilled pop song.

I used to be a big Train fan before they admittedly sold out. Pretty positive Monahan admitted it on the Stern show stating their style wasn't selling records so they went full pop.

In any case, their first two albums and a bit of their 3rd are really good. Felt like Americana. I used to make some long drives and would listen to the first two front to back. If you only know their shitty new stuff as mentioned in this thread, then you'd never recognize their old good stuff, save for Monahan's voice. Give the first two albums a shot before totally hating them.

It sounds the exact same to me. If I never hear that Meet Virginia song again the rest of my life, I'll be living good. And I had that album. It's garbage, but one man's trash is another man's treasure so listen to what you like.

I’m convinced they sold their soul to the Devil. There was one point where I swear they were on every show or sporting event on tv. You’d see them on CBS This Morning, as a football game half time entertainment and a late night show all in one day.

I generally hate this band’s music in that I find it to be bland safe radio friendly pop for mom’s on their way to yoga class.

That said, I found out recently that Drops of Jupiter is not about a yoga mom the leas singer is boning but was written about his own mom who had recently passed missing him in heaven and coming back for a visit. Part of me feels like that is sentimental nonsense, however, in that context I find lines like “did you finally get to dance along the light of day?” to be beautiful and moving. I hope she did.

I know you’re talking about this verse.

quote:

Can you imagine no love, pride, deep-fried chicken
Your best friend always sticking up for you
Even when I know you're wrong?
Can you imagine no first dance, freeze-dried romance
Five-hour phone conversation
The best soy latte that you ever had, and me

I agree this sucks. But the rest of the song is top tier lyrics.

Meet Virginia
Calling all angels
Look to the sky
Drops of Jupiter
All the way to marry me, being a decent song

I like all these. The only song I like from their newer stuff is 50 Ways to Say Goodbye. Really creative song IMO. Drive-by is good for what it is.

I saw them at the Houston Live Stock Show one year. For those not familiar, the live stock show (rodeo) last about two weeks and each night they have a concert at the end. Somebody gave us tickets so we went. I wasn't extremely familiar with Train, but it was one of the better concerts that I have been to. They seemed to have a lot of fun with the show and had a lot of audience participation. Not an ounce of ego in any of them.
