What instrument to buy a 6 y/o?

Unfortunately, I never learned to play an instrument as a kid. I want to give my kids the opportunity but really don’t know which instrument is the best for them to start off with learning.
Any suggestions on what would be best for a 6 y/o girl?
I have 6 kids total, all 6 and under. So hopefully something to pass down as the older ones hopefully advance.

Haha. Twins really pump your numbers up. I love it though. Wife is still relatively young and wants more.
So any recommendations on instruments?

Piano. Remains stationary (unless you get a keyboard). Very versatile and can be played as a group, also lots of benefits for the mind in learning piano.

I’d also say piano.
People I know Who learned piano early were able to transition to guitar well too.

Piano/keyboard. Without a doubt.

I would either get then:
A. A cheap keyboard with headphones
B. An electronic drum pad with headphones. I found one at Cullin’s, and my niece went nuts over it. Plus, her parents love the fact that it barely makes any noise except through the headphones.
I would wait on a small guitar until she’s closer to like 10.

Piano is my vote. I try to sway my kids in that direction all the time. I'm a drummer, and grew up in music as a percussionist. Eventually went to LSU on a music education scholarship, where I continued in marching percussion, jazz band, symphonic and orchestra as well as theory and singing. In that program, I also started to learn piano. I had learned to read music a bit prior to that b/c there are percussion instruments that require the ability to read music(more than just rhythms). I've always kicked myself for not picking up the piano earlier in life. IMO, it will build a foundation in music/theory that can more easily translate into other instruments, as some have already stated. Also, in my totally unprofessional opinion, piano players are just smarter people
*technically the piano is a percussion instrument.

Yeah, another vote for piano especially for a kid. Everything is laid out where you can see it and understand the notes and scales. But if a kid gravitates to something else like a wind instrument, drums, guitar etc, go for it. I'd rather a kid who wants to play something and is self motivated.

Drums
Learning how to multi-task while staying on beat will help way down the line with any other instruments.
Eta
Plus it kicks more arse than a piano, unless its 1955.

I have 6 children as well. We have a piano - they all play except the youngest. Two of them also play ukulele.
But the ‘big’ 5 also play - trumpet, trombone, alto-sax, clarinet, and drums. My husband and I were musicians - so a few of those were our instruments.
I’d suggest the piano - like it’s been previously mentioned - it’ll help with a lot of things (like music theory), especially if they want to learn another instrument later.

Take the kid to a local music store and see what they gravitate toward.

I have three now all grown, all of whom play different instruments and one with a degree in operatic performance. And every single one of them started on a straight recorder in 4th grade. Easy for them to master and grow some skill and confidence while learning to read sheet music. Also a super easy transition to other instruments, particularly woodwinds.

Funny part is that “hottub” was my call sign in the Navy that I got after my new bride and I were caught getting after it. They claim we were in the hot tub but we were really in the pool next to the hot tub but “hottub” stuck.
