They can be modern or classic; country or indie; please list anything you like!

I love the Everly Brothers. I'd have to say they are my favorite.

I also really enjoy the old-timey sound of folk music from the 1930s and 40s. For instance, this recording of Blue Moon of Kentucky by Bill Monroe from 1946 represents that type of natural, grassroots sound unique to old Appalachian folk music. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but this is such a neat sound to me. This kind of music really represents the land, and I'm from Appalachia so I believe I can say that. Of course, that's not to undermine the other artists from the region who have different musical styles.

I am someone who loves modern music too, so please do introduce me to new artists in this thread.

The EBs come from a country/bluegrass background, but they're more than simply "folk"

You say "folk" which most for most people will mean the singer-songwriters of the folk boom of the '50s and '60s, or those descended from them. But your example is Bill Monroe, bluegrass.

Are you asking about acoustic music? You need to define the thread more betterly.

Would Bluegrass not be a style of folk music?

IMHO you should have asked for bluegrass and old-timey acoustic music.

One reply to your OP suggested Neutral Milk Hotel. I think that is sufficient proof that you weren't specific enough in your original genre perimeters.

I’m not sure why you are laughing at Neutral Milk Hotel? Not folk? Not worthy of being the answer? Silly name?

It’s folk adjacent at least. I checked rateyourmusic classification for all I posted just to be sure since some aren’t pure folk. But NMH was called indie folk.

Based on the first paragraph of his post, I think it is clear his goal wasn’t a specific, narrow classification of folk.

I would call it folk fusion, but not pure folk. I think the difference, is in recording techniques and instruments used.
To me, to qualify as pure folk, you play traditional instruments. you mic it up and perform/record. No manipulation.

Pete Seeger is probably my all time favorite. Love to play his music for my kids.
